In Ohio, the statute of limitations for rape is 20 years. Tort laws cap how much sexual assault survivors can recover from their perpetrators.

In January, a Cuyahoga County Common Pleas judge sided with the defendant in reducing a settlement from $20 million to $250,000 for a plaintiff who was repeatedly raped as an 11-year-old girl.

Now, the legal community and Ohio lawmakers are rethinking the consequences of settlement caps and the statute of limitationswhen it comes to rape.

Today on All Sides With Ann Fisher: How the law and courts treat sexual assault survivors.

Guests:

  • John K. Fitch, attorney
  • Jessica Simpkins, abuse survivor
  • Marci Hamilton, professor and CEO of Child USA, University of Pennsylvania
  • State Rep. Bill Seitz (R-Cincinnati)
  • State Rep. Kristin Boggs (D-Columbus)
