The state legislature is racing against a Saturday deadline that would automatically – and massively – expand the number of public schools where students are eligible for private or religious school vouchers.
Left unchanged, the number of schools would balloon to 1,227, a 381% increase over a three-year period. That’s an expensive escalation.
The Senate on Tuesday night passed a measure that would have reduced the number of eligible public schools and raised the income level for who can qualify. The House on Wednesday unanimously rejected it, promising “bold ideas.”
With the clock ticking, left hanging in the balance are students, schools and taxpayers.
