The 10-year levy renewal and increase would bring in an estimated $13 million a year at the zoo.

More than 100 boys and girls will compete in the Silver Gloves regional boxing tournament Jan. 18 and 19 on Cleveland's East Side — and, for some, it could be a stepping stone toward the 2024 Summer Olympics. The boxers, aged 8 to 16, come from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana and Kentucky. They qualified for the tournament by winning state-level competitions and by being members in good standing of USA Boxing, the governing body for Olympic-style amateur boxing.

The unofficial count after last Tuesday’s election has Smith beating Greenspan by 1,180 votes. The 50.8 percent to 49.2 percent margin is a thin one, Smith admits, calling it simply “a close race.”

Larry McDonald, the officer who killed fleeing suspect Vincent Belmonte, Tuesday in East Cleveland. “This officer has been a huge problem for a long time,” said East Cleveland activist Justin Anderson during a Friday press conference outside city hall. “I have begged the mayor, I have pleaded with him. Every time this officer did something that was outrageous, I begged the mayor to terminate him.”
