G-8 leaders meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia, release a statement expressing "deepening concern" about rising civilian casualties on all sides of the violence in the Middle East. It also blamed the immediate crisis on "efforts by extremists forces to destabilize the region."

President Bush makes another appeal to U.S. allies for assistance in helping Iraq's transitional government establish a democratic society. Bush, whose requests for NATO involvement in Iraq have been rebuffed by French and German leaders, said at the close of the Group of Eight summit that NATO member nations could send troops to help train Iraqi security forces.
