  • Democrat Monique Smith is quietly celebrating her upset win in the Ohio Statehouse’s 16th District – which includes Westlake, Bay Village, Rocky River, North Olmsted and Fairview Park – while awaiting certified election results for her race against incumbent Republican Dave Greenspan. The unofficial count after last Tuesday’s election has Smith beating Greenspan by 1,180 votes. The 50.8 percent to 49.2 percent margin is a thin one, Smith admits, calling it simply “a close race.”

Larry McDonald, the officer who killed fleeing suspect Vincent Belmonte, Tuesday in East Cleveland. “This officer has been a huge problem for a long time,” said East Cleveland activist Justin Anderson during a Friday press conference outside city hall. “I have begged the mayor, I have pleaded with him. Every time this officer did something that was outrageous, I begged the mayor to terminate him.”
  • Updated: 5:45 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2020 Two out-of-state far-right activists have been charged with intimidating voters in Cuyahoga County. According to the Cuyahoga County prosecutor’s office, the scheme was allegedly hatched by Jacob Wohl, 22, and Jack Burkman, 54, to deter people from voting by mail. The pair is accused of sending more than 8,100 robocalls on Aug. 26 to phone numbers in Cleveland and East Cleveland.

  • Preliminary data show the infant mortality rate has dropped for every demographic in Cuyahoga County in 2019 except white babies, for which it increased slightly. The overall rate in 2019 (not counting December) was 7.75 per 1,000 live births, compared to 8.65 in 2018. Although the African American infant mortality rate dropped from 15.49 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2018 down to 13.97 in 2019, Cuyahoga County Board of Health statistician Richard Stacklin said black babies are still more than 3.5 times more likely to die than white babies.

  • Residents packed the Cleveland Heights Community Center to hear arguments for and against a new levy to support the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District. The 7.9 mill levy, which appears on the March 17 primary ballot, would raise more than $8 million in new revenue for the school district and add roughly $275 in property taxes per year for every $100,000 of a home’s value. The League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland, FutureHeights and Reaching Heights hosted the event.

Mike DeWine and Dr. Amy Acton, director of the Ohio Department of Health, issued an order Tuesday postponing elective surgeries and procedures in Ohio hospitals for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. The order takes effect at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
