Democrat Monique Smith Projected To Win Ohio Statehouse 16th District
Democrat Monique Smith is quietly celebrating her upset win in the Ohio Statehouse’s 16th District – which includes Westlake, Bay Village, Rocky River, North Olmsted and Fairview Park – while awaiting certified election results for her race against incumbent Republican Dave Greenspan. The unofficial count after last Tuesday’s election has Smith beating Greenspan by 1,180 votes. The 50.8 percent to 49.2 percent margin is a thin one, Smith admits, calling it simply “a close race.”
East Clevelanders Call For Firing Of Officer After Shooting
Updated: 9:32 p.m., Friday, Jan. 8, 2021 Activists and two city council members are calling for the firing of Sgt. Larry McDonald, the officer who killed fleeing suspect Vincent Belmonte, Tuesday in East Cleveland. “This officer has been a huge problem for a long time,” said East Cleveland activist Justin Anderson during a Friday press conference outside city hall. “I have begged the mayor, I have pleaded with him. Every time this officer did something that was outrageous, I begged the mayor to terminate him.”

Cuyahoga County Infant Mortality Rate Drops, But Racial Disparities Persist
Preliminary data show the infant mortality rate has dropped for every demographic in Cuyahoga County in 2019 except white babies, for which it increased slightly. The overall rate in 2019 (not counting December) was 7.75 per 1,000 live births, compared to 8.65 in 2018. Although the African American infant mortality rate dropped from 15.49 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2018 down to 13.97 in 2019, Cuyahoga County Board of Health statistician Richard Stacklin said black babies are still more than 3.5 times more likely to die than white babies.

Levy To Support Cleveland Heights-University Heights Schools Debated
Residents packed the Cleveland Heights Community Center to hear arguments for and against a new levy to support the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District. The 7.9 mill levy, which appears on the March 17 primary ballot, would raise more than $8 million in new revenue for the school district and add roughly $275 in property taxes per year for every $100,000 of a home’s value. The League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland, FutureHeights and Reaching Heights hosted the event.
