Senate Briefing Focuses on Iraqi Prisoner Abuse
The Senate Armed Services Committee receives a closed-door briefing from Army officials on the alleged abuse of Iraqis detained by U.S. military police. Lawmakers want to know if the problem is more widespread than has been reported. Critics say Pentagon leaders aren't doing enough to address the allegations. Hear NPR's David Welna.

Bush Urges Resolve in Iraq; Polls Show Doubts
President George Bush says Sunday's Iraqi uprisings show the importance of staying the course in the face of terrorist threats. But some senators question whether the June 30 deadline for transferring power will hold. Public opinion polls also reflect unease with Bush's plans and policies. Hear NPR's David Welna, NPR's Michele Norris and Andrew Kohut of the Pew Research Center.
Women, Children Allowed to Flee Fallujah Fighting
U.S. Marines in Iraq surrounding the embattled city of Fallujah are allowing women, children and the elderly to flee the fighting with militia forces -- but will not allow military-aged men to leave. The Marines are also allowing food, water and medicine to enter the city, but have turned away trucks full of men also trying to enter the city. Eric Niiler of member station KPBS, embedded with the 1st Marine Division, reports.
Rice Set to Testify on Terrorism Prevention Efforts
National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice will give sworn public testimony to the commission reviewing U.S. efforts to prevent terrorism before and after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Thursday. Rice's testimony comes as the commission is set to begin wrapping up its investigation. Hear NPR's Pam Fessler, NPR's Melissa Block and former deputy attorney general Jamie Gorelick.
Video Appears to Show U.S. Soldier Held Hostage
The Al Jazeera news network broadcasts a videotape showing a man who appears to be a U.S. soldier held hostage by mask-wearing gunmen in Iraq. The soldier identifies himself as Pfc. Keith Maupin of Battavia, Ohio, with the U.S. Army's 724th Transportation Company. Maupin has been listed as missing since April 9. Listen to NPR News.
Spanish Prime Minister to Withdraw Troops from Iraq
The new prime minister of Spain says his nation's 1,300 troops will be removed from Iraq as soon as possible. Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero says he's not convinced the United Nations will be able to assume control of Iraq by a June 30 deadline. Eleven Spanish soldiers have died in the Iraq conflict. Hear NPR's Cheryl Corley and Jerome Socolovsky.
Washington Abortion Rights March Draws Thousands
Massive demonstrations in Washington in support of abortion rights bring high-profile speakers and vocal opposition. Organizers called the event the "March for Women's Lives." While hundreds of thousands of marchers rallied to the capital, anti-abortion activists turned out in force, as well. Hear NPR's Libby Lewis, NPR's Cheryl Corley and former Texas governor Ann Richards.
Book Questions Framing of Bush's Iraq Policy
The Bush administration used money intended for Afghanistan to prepare for war in Iraq, according to Plan of Attack, a new book from Bob Woodward of The Washington Post. The book also alleges that Saudi Arabia offered to stabilize gas prices during President Bush's election year. NPR's Don Gonyea reports. White House Declassifies Qaeda Brief
Under pressure from a panel investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the White House Saturday declassified the President's Daily Brief document from August 6, 2001. The briefing, titled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.," has been mentioned often in testimony before the panel. Tenet Leaves Behind Mixed Legacy at CIA
Supporters of outgoing CIA Director George Tenet say he leaves behind an agency with greater morale, increased covert-operation capabilities and much-improved relations with the U.S. president. But critics say Tenet's support of faulty intelligence on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction crossed the line into policy advocacy. Hear NPR's Mike Shuster.
