  • Ten Plain Dealer journalists are leaving the newsroom after recent layoffs and a change in direction for the Cleveland paper. Twenty-two staffers were laid off at the end of last week. On Tuesday, the paper announced most of the remaining 14 journalists would be taken off their established beats and shifted to focus on five outlying counties. Now, 10 of those staffers are resigning from the paper.
  • Updated: 5:00 p.m., Monday, April 13, 2020 K-12 public schools in Ohio are expecting roughly $460 million from the federal government to help ease the financial burden of the coronavirus pandemic. That amount is based on the state’s share of Title 1 funding for high-poverty schools and much of it will be distributed to local districts, including charter schools, accordingly.
  • Cuyahoga County plans to inject another $5 million into its coronavirus response as it competes with other local government bidders for personal protective equipment. County council has scheduled a vote on the spending proposal Tuesday afternoon in a livestreamed remote meeting. The county has already spent $1.75 million, much of it to buy protective equipment including gloves, face shields and N95 respirator masks, according to a spending breakdown posted online.
  • Just before St. Patrick’s Day, Issue 33 supporters were in the home stretch of the push to raise property taxes for Cuyahoga County health and human services. Then state officials closed voting places on Primary Day to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Now, the campaign must stretch its resources another month to reach voters who have not yet cast ballots, as voting by mail continues through April.
  • Health officials in Mahoning County are investigating the state’s highest rate of coronavirus infection and say it’s too early to know why it’s happening. The Youngstown area has 77 cases for every 100,000 residents. Cuyahoga County has the highest number of confirmed cases overall, with 589 as of April 1, but is also more populated and has an confirmed infection rate of 47 per 100,000 residents. Mahoning County also has 10 confirmed deaths, the most of any Ohio county.

  • Ohio’s prison administrators are posting daily updates on coronavirus in the state’s facilities but those reports raise questions about the pandemic-related policies adopted by Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections (ODRC). Each afternoon, ODRC posts the number of tests performed, the test results, how many people are in isolation and how many are under quarantine, and which prisons they’re in.
  • Cleveland Metroparks is restricting access and closing down attractions to encourage social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic, including Edgewater Pier and Squire’s Castle. Metroparks is also closing some roadways and high-traffic attractions to ensure those visitors are maintaining a distance of at least six feet from one another as recommended by health officials. As public libraries and gathering places close down during the pandemic, parks have seen a surge in visitors.

  • Giant Eagle is shifting one Akron-area location to focus entirely on delivery and curbside pickup, to meet increasing demand and maintain social distancing during the coronavirus outbreak. The move will allow the store, located in Cuyahoga Falls on Howe Avenue, to take on a majority of the area’s delivery orders, said spokesperson Jannah Jablonowski. That will free up other resources for nearby locations, Jablonowski said.
