  • Members of Ohio’s judicial system are calling for more uniformity in sentencing practices across courtrooms. The state’s criminal sentencing commission argues an online database of previous sentences could aid in that effort.
  • Case Western Reserve University President Barbara Snyder will step down later this year to lead the Association of American Universities. Snyder is expected to leave Case Western after more than 12 years sometime this fall, but the university said the transition depends on the nationwide search for a new president, to be conducted by trustee Fred DiSanto, who will also become board chairman in June.
  • The next time you make a pit stop along the Ohio Turnpike, you can also get a little history lesson. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine unveiled Underground Railroad historical markers at two Ohio Turnpike rest areas Wednesday. The first unveiling was at the Commodore Perry Service Plaza, an eastbound service stop in Clyde. The second was at the Portage Service Place, a westbound service stop in Mantua. Both locations were chosen because of ties to the Underground Railroad.
  • The Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) is looking for ways to strengthen regional transportation networks across five counties with its next Long-Range Transportation Plan. It covers the preservation of current transportation infrastructure and creation of a more sustainable system over the next 20 years in Cuyahoga, Lorain, Lake, Geauga and Medina counties.
  • Summit County Council has approved spending $104 million in opioid settlement funds, but a committee that will determine how to use the money won't be fully formed until the spring. So it sits, unspent. Greta Johnson, assistant chief of staff to County Executive Ilene Shapiro, said federal Judge Dan Polster has made it clear this should be spent more responsibly than tobacco settlement money from the 1990s.

  • Updated: 8:50 p.m., Tuesday, March 17, 2020 Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Dr. Amy Acton, director of the Ohio Department of Health, issued an order Tuesday postponing elective surgeries and procedures in Ohio hospitals for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. The order takes effect at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
