  • The economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is hurting Northeast Ohio's arts community. Some numbers were released at board meeting Thursday afternoon. CAC polled 65 organizations that it supports through cigarette tax revenue - everyone from the Rock Hall and the Great Lakes Science Center to moCa Cleveland and the Ukrainian museum. ideastream also receives funding from CAC.
  • Akron Public Schools officially began online classes Wednesday, welcoming the district’s eighth, ninth, and 12th graders. Students from other grades will return throughout the week, with the youngest grades returning Monday. Superintendent David James said the district’s staggered start will allow for staff and students to do some orientation.
  • The Taj Mahal reopened at sunrise Monday for the first time since March 17. It is limited to 5,000 visitors a day, and all must wear masks. Before the pandemic, up to 70,000 people visited every day.

  • The Cuyahoga County Library is asking voters for more money this November, to help cover increasing operating costs. It’s the first time the library has asked for an additional levy in more than a decade. The levy would be a permanent 1-mill increase for Cuyahoga County residents, in addition to the continuing 2.5-mill levy the library currently receives. The funds would go toward general operations, as well as improvements to security and facilities.

  • Holden Arboretum is still working to repair damages from heavy snowfall and winds in early December, as more severe weather moved through Ohio over Christmas. The Dec. 1 storm damaged roughly 350 trees around the arboretum, said Vice President of Horticulture and Collections Caroline Tait, along with 26 more at the botanical gardens in University Circle. “It’s not something, unfortunately, done and dusted in a day,” Tait said. “Even though the storm was only one day, the impact lasts a bit longer.”

City officials also plan to redouble the enforcement of mask requirements, offer more coronavirus testing and expand contract tracing, Jackson told news media Friday. At the same time, the mayor acknowledged the limits in grappling with a pandemic in ways that vary city by city.
