The report looked at how much it costs to house inmates waiting for trial in four counties in Ohio – Athens, Cuyahoga, Franklin and Vinton counties – and came up with a statewide estimate that also factored in the added costs of pretrial services for those who are released while awaiting a trial.
  • A 19-year-old man was indicted Thursday for the murder of Cleveland police detective James Skernivitz, 53, and his informant, Scott Dingess, 50. David McDaniel was indicted on four counts of aggravated murder as well as several more counts of murder, aggravated robbery, felonious assault, tampering with evidence and one count of obstructing justice.
  • The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority is touting a $15 million federal grant that will help replace railcars, but the total tab for the project will be much higher. RTA on Wednesday said the federal funds will go toward replacing 34 aging railcars on its heavy rail Red Line. It’s the service’s most popular line, running from Hopkins airport on the West Side to the Louis Stokes-Windermere Station on the East Side, and averaging more than 20,000 riders daily.
  • The nation's confirmed coronavirus infections exceed 4.2 million, overtaking Brazil, with 4.1 million. The worst-affected country remains the U.S., far ahead with nearly 6.3 million cases.
  • Parma City School District is asking voters in Parma, Parma Heights and Seven Hills to support Issue 73, which would cover construction costs for the first round of changes in the district’s master plan. The 6.5 mill bond issue would raise the $300 million needed for the first phase of the school district’s “strategic consolidation” master plan. If Issue 73 passes, the owner of a $100,000 home would pay $18.97 a month in added taxes.
  • Cleveland officials and police are “prepared to handle whatever it is that occurs” on Tuesday and beyond, Mayor Frank Jackson said Monday, as cities across the country prepare for Election Day and any disturbances that may come with it. The City of Cleveland Division of Police has already started what was called its “operational period” for the election, and will be activating the emergency operations center to be able to react quickly to any safety issues around the election Tuesday.
  • The seat to represent the 16th Ohio House District, which includes Westlake, Bay Village, Rocky River, North Olmsted and Fairview Park, is up for grabs in this week’s election. Republican Dave Greenspan enjoys the benefits of incumbency. However, his challenger, Democrat Monique Smith, is feeling confident because of the high voter turnout so far. Smith, in an interview with ideastream, said her campaign has called “as many people as we can, reaching out to people and having conversations about the importance of voting.”
