  • The University of Akron is eliminating six of its 11 colleges, University President Gary Miller said, as part of a series of cost-cutting measures, including a drastic campus restructuring plan, passed by the school’s board of trustees Friday. Projections show the university may see a possible $65 to $70 million loss due to the coronavirus outbreak.
  • Gov. Mike DeWine announced Thursday certain entertainment facilities, including museums, may reopen June 10 so long as they abide by health and safety guidelines, such as social distancing and sanitizing surfaces. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History has not yet set a reopening date but planning is underway for when they do.
  • University Hospitals cut pay for more employees, citing increased costs and budget shortfalls caused by the pandemic. In a statement, the hospital said it is cutting doctors’ pay by 7 percent. Clinical leaders and doctors with administrative duties will see a 10 percent pay cut. University Hospitals had already reduced hours and cut pay for more than 4,000 employees in April. The hospital did receive $85 million dollars from a federal grant known as the CARES Act, but according to the statement, it wasn’t enough to avoid pay cuts.
  • All Cleveland State University (CSU) staff will be furloughed for four weeks, but will remain eligible for university benefits, according to a Friday email sent to university staff announcing immediate cost-cutting actions being taken due to the financial shortfall caused by the coronavirus pandemic. CSU staff will also see a tiered salary cut, expected to last six months. For example, CSU President Harlan Sands will receive a 12.5 percent salary reduction and staff making $150,000 or less will receive a six percent cut.
