New Search And Seizure Policies For Cleveland Police Get Monitor's Approval
The monitor overseeing the police consent decree in Cleveland signed off on new search-and-seizure policies, according to a Friday federal court filing. Under the new rules, if an officer to conducts a warrantless search, they must:
Cuyahoga County Sheriff Clifford Pinkney To Retire Aug. 2
Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Clifford Pinkney's departure is a retirement and not a resignation, according to a copy of the letter obtained by ideastream. Pinkney's last day with the department is Aug. 2. After a career of service than began with the U.S. Army before becoming part of Cuyahoga County law enforcement, "it is time for me to spend my time with my family and pursue new opportunites that have presented themselves," he wrote in the May 24 letter.
Across Northeast Ohio Health Levies Pass, A Sales Tax Fails
Voters in Cuyahoga County renewed a health and human services tax levy that will go towards mental health care, job training, MetroHealth hospital and other programs. 73 percent voted for the levy. In Lorain, a mental health services levy passed with 74 percent of the vote, while 61 percent voted in favor of a levy renewal for the health district in Portage county. The Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services Board of Lake County will continue to receive public funding for its programs thanks to a 67 percent favorable vote.
Researcher: Ohio’s Proficiency Standards Are Too Low
A new Stanford University analysis of state and national test scores shows more Ohio students pass state exams than similar nationwide tests, which researchers say means the state’s proficiency standards are too low. The analysis by Stanford’s Hoover Institution looks at NAEP scores, or the National Assessment of Educational Progress. The NAEP test is given to a nationally representative sample of fourth and eighth graders and is the only exam that allows the country to compare the academic progress of students across states.
Kasich Talks Virtue In Harvard Graduation Address
A crowd of graduates and their families at Harvard University welcomed Gov. John Kasich to Cambridge with loud applause after, during his introduction, it was noted that the former Republican presidential candidate did not vote for Pres. Donald Trump. Kasich didn’t offer words of advice during his commencement address at the Kennedy School of Government Wednesday, but instead told graduates not to count on people like him to make change.

Ohio Senators React To Trump's Decision On Iran Deal
Ohio's Senators are taking opposite sides after Pres. Donald Trump announced Tuesday he would back out of an agreement meant to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. After the announcement, Republican Senator Rob Portman said he supports President Trump’s decision to back out of the Iran nuclear deal. Portman said he didn’t think the initial deal—negotiated under the Obama administration—went far enough to restrict Iran’s ballistic missile program and support for terrorist organizations.
