'Separating Sheep from Goats' Honors Sherman E. Lee's Legacy
If you're a frequent visitor to the Cleveland Museum of Art, then you likely know about its world-renowned collection of Asian art. However, you might not know much about the man who was instrumental in piecing it together, Sherman E. Lee, CMA's director from 1958 to 1983. Sherman E. Health Care Top Issue For Ohio Voters In Midterm Election
As Election Day approaches, healthcare issues have dominated the political debate and airwaves in Ohio and nationwide. A new Baldwin-Wallace poll, released this week, finds health care is the top issue in deciding how Ohioans will vote for governor and US Senate. Rocky River resident Bernie Buckner says neither political party has done enough to solve the problem of high health care costs. Buckner reached out to ideastream in response to the “You First” initiative, where we asked listeners and viewers to discuss issues that matter to them.

Zoss The Swiss Baker Closing After 23 Years In Cleveland Heights
The red and blue of a neon Opensign stands out well against the gray, rainy sky over Cleveland Heights on a recent weekday. Zoss, The Swiss Baker has called this home for 23 years, and things look to me just as they did almost exactly five years ago. At that time, I had just started my new chapter in Cleveland, after working as a correspondent for Switzerland’s public broadcaster.

More Than Murals: Cleveland Artists Use Skills For Civic Change
City governments and community organizations often turn to local artists to brighten-up abandoned neighborhood walls. Eyesores are beautified and artists get a chance to earn some money. But, arts advocates argue that artists offer much more than decoration to area neighborhoods.

Lead Exposure Is Not Just An Issue For The Young
In 1985, Darrick Wade was living in Lakeview Terrace on Cleveland’s near west side with his family when he first started noticing something was off with his son, Demetrius. "When he was about two years old, I believe he had an episode of an attack of the lead, that toxin," Wade said. "Because he shook a chair real angrily, and I didn’t understand where that anger came from at such a young age."

Can Reading Counteract The Effects Of Lead Poisoning?
About a year ago, at one years old, Eden Tobik was found to have a blood lead level of 19. Any amount of lead is harmful to young children; five is the threshold of concern. Her mother, Casey Tobik, was devastated. “Shock, guilt, shame, fear, despair, terror, sets in,” said Tobik. “And then you Google it and it gets even worse.”

Hinckley’s Buzzards Are Just Around The Corner
They might not be the most beautiful of birds and their dining choices would cause most of us to blanch, but in Northeast Ohio many people look forward to the return of the buzzards. March 15 is the day that the buzzards, which are actually turkey vultures, are expected in Hinckley Township. Bird watchers flock to the area in the northeast corner of Medina County to witness this event, which for many is the sign that spring is near, and join in a day of activities celebrating their return.

Danny Caine’s Poetry Considers Malls, Beer Ads and Waffle House
Danny Caine’s poems are not about Grecian urns and comparisons to a summer's day. Instead, the Solon native writes of past-their-prime shopping malls, Budweiser commercials and trip to the Waffle House in his new book, “Continental Breakfast” (Mason Jar Press). Tucked in these often funny poems are sharp observations about popular culture’s deep hold on our lives.

How Licensing Fees Affect Live Music Performances
You may not realize it, but every time you hear a singer strumming in a bar or some pop tunes streaming in a coffee shop, that business is on the hook for those songs through a music license. Songwriters get a cut every time one of their tunes is played. But, there’s a concern that local live music could be a casualty of this system.
Climate Workshops Across Cleveland Connect Sustainability With Everyday Issues
Cleveland’s plan to deal with climate change needs an update – it’s been four years since the document was created. But instead of city leaders meeting to decide what’s best for everyone, the city is holding workshops and asking its neighbors for input. Since December, Cleveland’s Office of Sustainability and Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, a community development organization, have visited 11 communities including Hough, Slavic Village and Clark-Fulton.
