Much of our nation’s first civil rights movement took place at night, as those seeking freedom along the Underground Railroad navigated uncertain paths, often by moonlight. An exhibit at the Canton Museum of Art takes visitors on that journey.

Vanguards Want To Meet With City, Discuss Charges Against Fire Department
Black firefighters in Cleveland are hoping for a sit-down with city officials to address charges of racial and gender discrimination, following a recent report from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The Vanguards of Cleveland, an association of black professional firefighters, cite a variety of practices that the EEOC report says are discriminatory against blacks, Hispanics and women.

'Cartography' Brings Immigrant Tales to Playhouse Square

Case Western Reserve University Students Enter Spotlight At CPH
For close to a quarter of a century, Case Western Reserve University has partnered with Cleveland Play House on a Master of Fine Arts degree in acting. Each season, graduate students produce their own shows at Playhouse Square, but they also get the opportunity to be cast in a professional play with CPH. One former student, Ohio-native Rich Sommer, is best known for his role as Harry Crane on the television hit show "Mad Men."

Postcards From The Pandemic: No Joy In Flowerville
This May is unlike any Michael Day has seen as owner of Flowerville, a custom design floral shop in University Heights. Normally, Day and his staff are extremely busy creating arrangements for a month filled with weddings, graduations, proms and First Communion ceremonies. However, the stay-at-home directive issued to combat COVID-19 has caused many of those events to be canceled or postponed. This drastic reduction in business has deprived Day of much of his income during this all-important month.

Postcards From The Pandemic: Take A Joy Ride With Rock Hall's Lisa V.
Before Ohio's stay-at-home order, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Lisa Vinciquerra was getting ready for the 2020 Induction Ceremony which was to be held in Cleveland May 2. As the Rock Hall's director of production and live events, she was also planning concert celebrations for the museum's 25th anniversary. "We had many cool things planned for this summer that unfortunately are not going to happen anymore," Vinciquerra said. After more than a decade of staging shows on the Rock Hall plaza, now she's taking music to the masses with the Joy Ride van.

Postcards From The Pandemic: Frenchman In A Strange (Cleve)Land
Engineer Alex Minot emigrated from his native France to Cleveland in mid-February for a new job. At the time, he and his wife Wendy Lovinger were aware of the coronavirus, but they weren't much concerned about it affecting their lives. "Mostly I was just afraid that airport security would be a lot longer, that clearing immigration might take longer, that I'd miss my connecting flights," he said.

Media Scholar On Canceled moCa Art Exhibition On Police Violence
Cleveland’s Museum of Contemporary Art (moCa) canceled a summer exhibition by New York artist Shaun Leonardo, “The Breath of Empty Space.” The reason given was that its drawings of Black and Brown victims of police violence could be traumatizing to local viewers. News of the cancelation sparked national attention as people are speaking out against police brutality and racism around the world.
