A longstanding Northeast Ohio art tradition carries on during the pandemic shutdown. Since 2005, the Pretentious Cleveland Portrait Artists have gathered in area taverns and studios to render volunteer models in paint, pencil and pastel. Elyria’s Jessica Zevotek said her three older children were “devastated” when they learned they wouldn’t be able to attend the Elyria Arts Council’s kids art drop-in program because of restrictions on gatherings due to the coronavirus. Cleveland Health Officials Tracking June Jump In COVID-19 Cases
Cleveland has seen a spike in new coronavirus cases in June, public health officials told city council on Monday. For 103 new patients, initial symptoms trace back to the third week of June, according to a city health department presentation. That was a jump over the prior two weeks, but below symptom onset numbers for earlier in May. The city reported 75 new cases on Sunday, the biggest daily increase in Cleveland's case count to date. Health Director Merle Gordon said those numbers were not reflected in her presentation to city council.

Ohio County Fairs Face Grass-Roots Efforts To Ban Confederate Flags
County fairs around Northeast Ohio are debating whether to ban sale or display of the Confederate flag. The grass-roots movement comes after state legislators killed a proposal that would have banned the flag across all fairs last month. Portage County is the latest to face calls to remove the Confederate flag from its county fair. A petition from Portage County Young Democrats urges the fair board to take the “necessary steps” of banning the sale and display of the flag at the Portage County Randolph Fair.
