Meet Cain Park's New Artistic Director Joanna May Hunkins
For Joanna May Hunkins summertime means one thing: Cain Park. Hunkins’ mother, Sarah May, served as Cain Park's artistic director in the early 1970s, and she spent many of her summer vacations at the Cleveland Heights performance space as a camper, counselor, performer, director and whatever else needed to be done. Voting Rights Act of 1965 Inspires Poet R.A. Washington
In August 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law, enforcing voter rights for racial minorites. More than a half-century later, only 30-percent of registered voters are expected to vote November 7 in Northeast Ohio according to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. In response to this voting indifference, Tri-C Jazz Fest has commissioned Grammy-winner Terence Blanchard to compose a new piece inspired by the voting act. Joining him is local poet R.A. Washington who's charged with writing the work's libretto.
Clevelanders Ring In Chinese New Year
Tuesday marks the Lunar New Year and the start of the Year of the Pig, but some Clevelanders got an early jump on the festivities this past weekend. Among them was Wayne Wong, Vice President of the Cleveland Chapter of an Asian American advocacy group called OCA. Wong led a dragon dancing troupe at a New Year celebration event Sunday at Asian Town Center, a shopping mall in Cleveland’s AsiaTown neighborhood. “Lunar New Year is similar to, in Western culture, New Year, Fourth of July, and Thanksgiving all rolled up into one,” Wong said.

The study also defines creative workers more broadly than people may typically think by including people working in fields like media and design.
