Study Projects More Growth For Downtown Cleveland
A new report says Downtown Cleveland has capacity for thousands more housing units, but is lagging in homeowners and should work to preserve affordable housing options. The report, released Wednesday, was prepared by consulting firm Urban Partners and commissioned by the Downtown Cleveland Alliance, a nonprofit that advocates for the neighborhood. Housing Demand Expected To Continue Downtown population has grown about 56 percent since 2010, and the researchers expect continued demand for market-rate housing.

N. Scott Momaday Brings a Native American Perspective to a Time of Chaos
2018 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award winner N. Scott Momaday helped reshape the perception of Native American culture over the course of a 50-year career. His first novel, “House Made of Dawn” won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1969, making him one of the first indigenous writers to break into mainstream literature. Momaday said there’s a certain satisfaction in telling a story, but that’s not what really motivates his writing.

Fewer UH Bikes Available As Operator Awaits New Batteries
Cuyahoga County’s UH Bikes fleet, once 250 bicycles strong, has dwindled to a few dozen as the bikeshare system’s operator works to replace aging batteries. There were fewer than 45 UH Bikes available Monday afternoon, according to the mobile app that allows users to find and book bikes. Several racks across the city are empty, and a number of bikes appear to be inoperable.

USA Triathletes Expect High Waves On Lake Erie For Second Year
Ann Hall stands with a few dozen other athletes on Edgewater Beach, gazing out at a white-capped Lake Erie. "I'm just trying to kind of mentally prepare myself if we have rough waters again," she says. She's one of 4,500 athletes who'll compete in the USA Triathlon Aug. 10 and 11, as the event comes to Cleveland for the second year in a row.

Cleveland Police Looking For A New Home For Horses
Cleveland police officials are scouting out new sites for the horses serving in its mounted unit. Officials from the city’s capital projects office and police presented their preferred sites for new stables to city council’s safety committee this week. The 70-year-old stables they use are outdated, according to safety director Michael McGrath,

Maple Heights Mayor Hopeful City Will Leave Fiscal Emergency Soon
The mayor of Maple Heights says she’s hoping the state will release her inner-ring suburb from fiscal emergency early next year. The comments come after the state-appointed commission overseeing the city’s finances approved a new recovery plan Thursday. “We believe that we’re in a good position to ask the first of the year to formally make the announcement that we’re released,” said Mayor Annette Blackwell, a Democrat who took office in 2016 and is seeking another term this year.

Cleveland Clinic Study: Weight-Loss Surgery Cuts Risk Of Major Heart Issues
For people with obesity and diabetes, there’s growing evidence of the benefits of weight-loss surgery. Cleveland Clinic researchers found that in patients with both obesity and uncontrolled diabetes, weight loss surgery is associated with a 40% reduction in heart issues and death. This is in comparison to the usual recommendation of lifestyle changes and medications. In absolute terms, weight-loss surgery is associated with an 8% reduction in risk of death over eight years.

Poet Sonia Sanchez Wins Anisfield-Wolf Lifetime Achievement Award
Sonia Sanchez's work as a groundbreaking poet will be honored in Cleveland Thursday night with the lifetime achievement honor from the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards. The prize was created in 1938 to celebrate literature that explores issues of race and diversity. Past winners have included such notables as playwright August Wilson, novelist Toni Morrison and civil rights leader Rev Martin Luther King, Jr.
