Plan To Keep Asian Carp Out Of Great Lakes Needs Money
Lake Erie advocates are hoping a proposed U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project in Illinois will block invasive carp species from entering the Great Lakes — but they’re watching to see how officials will pay for it. Representatives of several Great Lakes and environmental groups met Sept. 4 in Perry to talk with Rep. Dave Joyce (R-Ohio) about protecting the lake.

Mass Layoffs Displaced 14,000 Ohio Workers in 2018
The number of Ohioans who lost their jobs in "mass layoffs" was higher in 2018 than the year before. Generally speaking, when a company with more than 100 employees decides to lay off 50 or more people, a federal law known as the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) considers that a "mass layoff." But before that can happen, an employer must provide employees with at least 60 days written notice.

Cleveland Clinic Says Not Yet To Prescribing Medical Marijuana
With the first legal sale of medical marijuana in Ohio expected to occur as early as next week, the Cleveland Clinic wants its patients to know that its doctors will not be prescribing it. Dr. Paul Terpeluk, Medical Director of Employee Health Services at the Cleveland Clinic, said many of the Clinic's patients have asked whether they can get a script for medical marijuana. For now, he said, the official answer is: "Not yet."

Activists Press For Cuyahoga County Jail Reforms
Advocates for reforms at the Cuyahoga County Jail are trying to keep the pressure on county leaders, seven months after a U.S. Marshals Service report called conditions at the facility “inhumane.” A coalition of activist groups rallied outside the Justice Center on Monday morning before packing a justice reform meeting chaired by the county executive and presiding common pleas judge.

East Side Communities Working Together To Roll Out Scooter Rules
Electric scooters will likely make their way to five of Cleveland’s eastern suburbs later this year, after a survey of residents showed overwhelming enthusiasm. About 1,100 people responded to an online survey covering Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, University Heights, Euclid and South Euclid, with more than 70 percent of respondents in favor of bringing scooter companies to the area. The survey asked residents whether they supported scooters on an initial trial basis.

Police Pursuit Policies Face New Scrutiny After Recent Incidents
The question of when police should or shouldn’t pursue a suspect is again prompting calls for reform. New questions are being raised following a police chase in Cleveland that ended with a crash on Woodland Avenue. During Wednesday’s Safety Committee meeting at Cleveland City Council, Blaine Griffin said Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost and Gov. Mike DeWine should work to establish statewide standards for police pursuits,

AAA forecasts around 7 million people will fly this holiday season. If you’re one of them, brace yourself for a busy time in the security line, retrieving luggage and catching a ride. But along with the hustle and bustle at Cleveland Hopkins Airport, there’s also respite in the form of art. More than 150 works of art line the walls of the Cleveland airport — much of it created by artists here in Northeast Ohio. It’s all part of the airport’s art program.
