UAW Lawsuit Says GM Lordstown Workers Could Replace Temps At Indiana Plant
The United Auto Workers labor union is suing General Motors over the use of temporary workers at a plant in Indiana, saying that laid-off members from Lordstown could do the jobs. The UAW filed the suit this week in federal court in Youngstown. The suit accuses the company of violating a labor agreement that allows laid-off employees with seniority to seek to relocate to other GM facilities. The complaint says the union agreed to GM’s hiring of temporary employees in Fort Wayne, Indiana, through August 2018 to help with the launch of a new pickup truck.

Women Struggling With Homelessness Find Peace Through Art
Every Wednesday several women staying at the Norma Herr shelter in downtown Cleveland walk a couple of blocks to the ArtCraft building on Superior Avenue. It is home to a number of art studios, including Across the Lines, which launched earlier this year to provide women struggling with homelessness a place of their own to create. In a studio loft on the fifth floor, eight women sat around folding tables on a recent Wednesday afternoon. Each woman crafted her own piece of artwork.

Northeast Ohio Students Write Songs of Protest and Hope
Lakewood choir teacher Lisa Richards doesn’t typically talk about bullying, racism and gun violence with her students at Garfield Middle School. Nevertheless, the students have a lot to say about the topics and recently wrote songs promoting social change. One of their songs, “Guns Down,” is a response to mass shootings and calls for amending laws and spreading awareness that no one person is alone. Another song, “Turn Around,” carries a message of redemption.

On a fence surrounding the work are satirical messages, like “BORE THE PEOPLE” and “A THOUSAND POINTS OF SLIGHT.”

Husted In Cleveland On Workforce Tour To Highlight Vocational Training
Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted was in Cleveland Monday on the first leg of what he's calling his week-long "Statewide Workforce Tour." The goal is to highlight vocational training programs that provide pathways to well-paying jobs. Speaking with executives and students at Tech Elevator, a computer coding school in Cleveland, Husted asked what the state can do to support programs like it. One suggestion: stop requiring bachelor's degrees for state government jobs that focus on computer programming. Husted was receptive to the idea.
