White House Releases Bush Guard Records
The White House makes more than 300 pages of documents available to the news media in an effort to answer questions about whether President Bush fulfilled his National Guard service during the Vietnam War. It's presented as the complete record of the president's service, but there are few specifics to place Bush at an Alabama air base in 1972 and 1973. NPR's Don Gonyea reports.

Iraqi Shiite leaders call for calm following coordinated suicide bombings at two Shiite shrines in Baghdad and Karbala Tuesday that killed at least 185 people. U.S. officials believe a Jordanian militant linked to al Qaeda is behind the attacks. But many Iraqis and Shiite leaders fault U.S. occupation forces for failing to provide adequate security. U.S., British Forces Adapt for Longer War
U.S. and British military commanders prepare for an "extended" war in Iraq. Adjustments in the war plan recognize that Iraqi citizens have not welcomed the invasion, and in some cases are forming counter-insurgency groups. More U.S. troops are on the way to Iraq, and could shift from a support role to a battlefield role. Hear NPR's Bob Edwards and NPR's Steve Inskeep.
