Chautauqua Institution’s Virtual Summer
For 146 consecutive summers, nothing has stopped the Chautauqua Institution in western New York from opening its doors to welcome guests who come for discussions, concerts, lectures and other events. “Not the Great Depression or Spanish flu or anything in-between,” said Chautauqua Institution President Michael Hill.

Summit County Voters To Consider Renewal, Increase For Akron Zoo Levy
The Akron Zoo is seeking a levy increase for the first time in its 67-year history. Summit County Issue 47 would support operations and maintenance. The original 0.8-mill levy was instated in 2000, and has been renewed without any increases for the past two decades. This year’s 0.4-mill levy addition would help cover the expansion of facilities and educational programming. The 10-year levy renewal and increase would bring in an estimated $13 million a year at the zoo.

Pete Beatty Tells Tall Tales In ‘Cuyahoga’
The story of “Big Son,” a mythical young man who could knock down trees, wrestle bears and eat more than one thousand pancakes, might never have been told if Pete Beatty had found more documentation about the bridge war between Ohio City and Cleveland in the 1830s. Beatty had set out to write historical non-fiction about the dispute over where to put bridges over the Cuyahoga River, but he came up short in his research of history.

'Raw Data’ Blog Isn’t About Coronavirus Numbers, But Stories
Like all of us in March, Northeast Ohio-based writers (and sisters) Mary and Susan Grimm tried to make sense of life as the coronavirus pandemic exploded around them. Mary Grimm, the Cleveland Arts Prize winning novelist and short story writer, said the idea for starting a blog as a way to chronicle COVID-19’s effects on their lives belonged to Susan, “Ohio Poet of the Year,” in 1999.

Cleveland Council President Wants Wind Turbine Restrictions Removed
Cleveland City Council President Kevin Kelley is asking Gov. Mike DeWine and the Ohio Power Siting Board to reconsider restrictions on a proposed wind turbine project in Lake Erie. The restrictions, which include the requirement for shutting down the turbines every night for two-thirds of the year to protect migratory birds, will prevent the Icebreaker wind turbine project from proceeding, Kelley said in letters to the board and DeWine. The board’s restrictions unnecessary and are actively trying to halt development of renewable energy, Kelley said.

New Initiative to Bring Broadband to Rural Ohioans
By Nick Evans, WOSU Many rural areas around the country have limited or even no broadband access because providers say it’s too expensive to run new cable or fiber optic lines. But a new partnership between Microsoft and Agile networks could bring broadband service to some of these areas for the first time. Agile Networks CEO Kyle Quillen says the partnership, known as the Airband Initiative, would avoid much of the expense by relying on wireless signals instead.
