Muslims Mourn Top Iraqi Shiite Leader's Death
Tens of thousands of Muslims begin a three-day march to mourn Ayatollah Mohammed Baqer al-Hakim, a revered Iraqi Shiite cleric killed by a car-bomb attack Friday. Al-Hakim, a long-time opponent of Saddam Hussein, was one of more than 100 people killed in the bombing of the Imam Ali Mosque in Najaf. Hear NPR's Ivan Watson.

Kerry Makes White House Bid Official
Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) confirms that he will seek the Democratic presidential nomination. Kerry has campaigned and raised money for more than a year. The official announcement comes as he trails rival New England Democrat Howard Dean, the former Vermont governor, in early polls for the critical New Hampshire primary. NPR's Anthony Brooks reports.

FBI: U.N. Blast Likely Suicide Attack
U.S. Iraq administrator Paul Bremer says that despite Tuesday's bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad, the country is not in chaos. Investigators theorize the attackers were either Saddam loyalists or outside militants who infiltrated Iraq. The FBI says it has found evidence suggesting the attack was a suicide bombing. France, Germany Cool to U.S. Appeal for Iraq Help
A draft resolution by the United States asking for a greater U.N. role in Iraq is called "insufficient" by France and Germany. At a news conference, French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder say the resolution needs to cede more authority in Iraq to the United Nations. NPR's Vicky O'Hara reports.

Senate Briefing Focuses on Iraqi Prisoner Abuse
The Senate Armed Services Committee receives a closed-door briefing from Army officials on the alleged abuse of Iraqis detained by U.S. military police. Lawmakers want to know if the problem is more widespread than has been reported. Critics say Pentagon leaders aren't doing enough to address the allegations. Hear NPR's David Welna.

Quattrone Found Guilty of Obstruction
Investment banker Frank Quattrone, who rose to fame during the dot-com stock bubble, is convicted of obstructing justice in a federal investigation. After deliberating for more than seven hours, a federal jury found Quattrone guilty in a case that hinged on an email in which Quattrone encouraged colleagues to destroy files. An appeal is expected. U.S. Military Extends Fallujah Cease-Fire
U.S. military officials extend the cease-fire in the Iraqi city of Fallujah for at least two more days. U.S. officials agree to send troops on joint patrols with Iraqi police and civil defense officers in Fallujah instead of launching an assault on the city. Bush Rebukes Rumsfeld on Iraqi Abuse Scandal
President Bush has reportedly privately scolded Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld for failing to tell him about pictures depicting the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners. The White House has asked Congress for $25 billion in reserve funds to continue military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan through the rest of the year. NPR's Andrea Seabrook reports.

Blair Seeks U.N. Help in Iraq Transition
British Prime Minister Tony Blair meets with President Bush Friday. British officials say Blair hopes to flesh out a role for the United Nations in Iraq's transition. Blair has faced criticism at home for having little influence when it comes to Iraq -- despite Britain's 10,000 troops there. NPR's Michele Kelemen reports.

New Iraqi Security Force to Aid Marines in Fallujah
Under an emerging plan to end the siege of Fallujah, U.S. Marines pull back from some positions, to be replaced by a newly formed Iraqi security force commanded by one of Saddam Hussein's former generals. Fighting continues in parts of Fallujah, and two Marines were killed in a bombing outside the town. NPR's Anne Garrels reports.
