'Human Shields' Position Themselves in Iraq
It's estimated that hundreds of volunteer "human shields" are in Baghdad from the United States and elsewhere. They're placing themselves at installations in an effort to prevent U.S. bombing. NPR's Melissa Block talks to volunteer human shield Ken Nichols O'Keefe, and to Paul Eliopolous, an American who became an involuntary shield when arrested by Iraqis in Kuwait in 1990.

U.S., Britain, Spain Plan Weekend Summit on Iraq
President Bush meets with the leaders of Britain and Spain Sunday to discuss strategy for an uphill battle to pass a U.N. resolution sanctioning military action against Iraq. The resolution may lack the votes necessary to pass the U.N. Security Council -- and faces veto threats as well. NPR's Vicky O'Hara reports.

Polls: American Resolve over Iraq Remains Steady
American public opinion shifts as the war enters its second week. New polls show the number of Americans who think the war is going well is down from 70 percent to 38 percent. Pentagon: Resistance from 'Fedayeen' Forces Unexpected
Pentagon rethinks its strategy in the U.S. advance toward Baghdad as troops face unexpected levels of resistance from a group of Iraq's irregular forces. The Fedayeen fighters, who dress in civilian clothes and attack U.S. tanks and vehicles from pickup trucks, have slowed the movement of U.S. and British forces. Hear NPR's Tom Gjelten.

Mass. Legislators Debate Gay Marriage, Union
Massachusetts lawmakers discuss for a second day the wording of a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage but legalize civil unions. The floor debate has been marked by passionate and emotional speeches. Bomb Kills at Least 50 at Iraqi Police Station

Tenet: CIA Never Claimed Imminent Threat
Defending pre-war intelligence on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, CIA director George Tenet says his analysts "never said there was an imminent threat." Guantanamo 'Enemy Combatants' to Get Hearings
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says accused enemy combatants being held at the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will have their cases reviewed once a year by a new special panel. Rumsfeld also indicates some of the prisoners could be held indefinitely, or until the United States determines they no longer pose a threat. NPR's Vicky O'Hara reports.
