Celebrating the ‘Jazz Age’ Exhibit With Jazz Music
With much attention focused on the Cleveland Museum of Art exhibit, “The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s,” Cleveland Jazz Orchestra’s artistic director Paul Ferguson wanted to kick of the CJO’s 2017-18 season with a nod to the music that gave the era its name. So now the question became: what to play? Ferguson turned to a work that has come for many to represent the sound of the “Jazz Age.”

'Modern Warrior Live' Aims to Ease Transition from Combat to Home
A new generation of war veterans is adjusting to life back home, away from combat. But, how do you go from that life to this? That's what "Modern Warrior - Live" takes on. It's a jazz and storytelling collaboration between veteran Jaymes Poling and trumpeter Dominick Farinacci.
Photographer Re-imagines History in Gratiot, Ohio
A road trip to a small village in Central Ohio led photographer Laura Ruth Bidwell to create an exhibit based on imaginary characters portrayed by a pair of real-life Clevelanders. It's a story she shares in her new series, Gratiot, on view now at the Cleveland Print Room.
Another Government Shutdown Over DACA "Unlikely," Says Senator Sherrod Brown
With another government shutdown looming this week, Senate Democrats, including Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, are still hoping to strike a deal on protections for the undocumented immigrants known as "Dreamers." But at a news conference Monday, Brown suggested that failure to reach an agreement on the issue is "unlikely" to result in another shutdown.

Sonny Rollins Establishes Oberlin Ensemble to Give Back
It was a letter that helped jazz legend Sonny Rollins make up his mind. The 87 year old jazz legend, whose life life-long mission has been to give back to others wanted to award a major gift to one of the schools that had honored him with a doctorate. The question became: “where?” Rollins who has received honorary degrees from a number of institution was considering Berklee College of Music, The New England Conservatory and Julliard School.

Cleveland State Students Give Voice to What Young Women Face in 'Emotional Creature'
From worrying about finding the perfect selfie to working in a factory making Barbies, young women around the world can have very different experiences. But they all have feelings, and students at Cleveland State’s University explore them in “Emotional Creature- The Secret Life of Girls Around the World.” The all-female cast gives voice to young women’s secrets, triumphs, fears and pain through poetry, monologues, songs and scenes in the play by Eve Ensler of the "Vagina Monologues." While the CSU production falls in the #MeToo era, it wasn’t planned that way.
Kevin Kelley Reelected As Cleveland City Council President
Cleveland City Council’s Democratic caucus voted unanimously on Monday to retain Kevin Kelley as the body’s president. No other members made a bid for the top leadership spot. The caucus invoked the “unit rule,” a procedural measure that enforces unanimity when the leadership vote is officially recorded on the council floor Jan. 1. Democrats who break with the majority would not be invited back to party caucus meetings.

National Center for Choreography Creates 'Dance Laboratory' at University of Akron
In order to create, a choreographer needs more than just a room of his or her own. Time, money, and even technology are necessary for the choreographer to act when the inspiration for a new dance strikes. Now Northeast Ohio has all of that with the creation of one of only two centers for choreography in the nation, located at the University of Akron. It's the National Center for Choreography and its first executive-artistic director is Christy Bolingbroke.
