Lyme Disease on the Rise in Ohio; Here's How to Avoid Tick Bites
As Ohio’s deer hunting season ramps up concerns about Lyme disease are also rising. Health experts point to the blacklegged tick which transmits the disease and can pose a problem for visitors to wooded areas. Some 241 cases of Lyme disease have been reported in 60 Ohio counties in 2017 so far, a significant increase from the 160 cases reported last year, according to the Ohio Department of Health which authored the report.

Lawsuit Over Recycling-Plant-Turned-Dump Moves Forward Without Defendants
Some East Cleveland residents who say a recycling company turned its site into an illegal dumping ground are closer to having their day in court. Judge Carolyn Friedland of the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas signed an order Monday granting the residents' request for a default judgment hearing after the defendant, Arco Recycling, Inc., failed to respond to the plaintiffs' initial lawsuit. If Arco is a no-show at an upcoming December 21 hearing, the residents could automatically win the case.

'Black Votes Matter': African-Americans Propel Jones To Alabama Win
More than 90 percent of African-Americans voted for Doug Jones in Alabama's special Senate election Tuesday and Jones had the support of 98 percent of black women, according to exit polling.
New Art Exhibit "Waiting for a Break" on Lake Erie
On the Great Lakes, boat and ship traffic is slowing down for the winter. Meanwhile, in Cleveland, residents have a chance to watch Lake Erie change as ice builds up -- and breaks up – it’s part of an unusual public art exhibit called Waiting for a Break,by Ohio artist Julia Christiansen. On a large screen downtown, 6 live video feeds show different spots along Lake Erie. One shows waves lapping over rocks, others show a remote island and a nearby bay.

Cartoonist Roz Chast Relishes the Dark Humor of Life
If you've ever thumbed through TheNew Yorker magazine chances are you've come across the cartoons of Roz Chast. They feature middle-class Manhattanites fretting about the most mundane things with absurd titles like, "Rejected by the School of Hard Knocks" or, "Unfeasible Good Luck Charms" or, "Little Investment on the Prairie."
Niagara Falls Sewage Release Highlights Aging Systems
By Angelica Morrison Niagara Falls, N.Y., has a messy problem -- it continues to dump sewage and discolored water downriver from the popular tourist attraction. The most recent incident happened Wednesday afternoon. New York State said this week’s discharge released an estimated 5 million gallons of sewage into the Niagara River. State officials say the “badly discolored water” violates its water quality standards, and they want the Niagara Falls Water Board to correct the issue.

Leslie Harrison Turns The Silence Of Sadness Into Poetry
The silence was deafening. That’s the way poet Leslie Harrison felt after the passing of her mother, with whom she was quite close. Her mother was a single parent after Leslie’s father left the family when she was a small child. Their bond was intensified in later years, when Leslie’s mother’s health began to decline.

Emotional Send-off For Ohio Aid Meant For Puerto Rico
“The first thing I want to say is hallelujah!” said an emotional Margie Colon at the IX Center Monday. Community members held a send-off for some 500,000 lbs. of supplies, food, and water meant for Puerto Rico, still in desperate need for aid after Hurricane Maria. Colon is one of the organizers of the effort. She’s a Metrohealth employee, and also a member of the group Latin American Academics, Athletics and Arts.
