In the 1980s, Charlotte Morgan honed her skills capturing stories for the East Side Newson Woodland Avenue. She said she didn't realize at the time how important a black newspaper was to the community. “We had a mandate: Get alternative news for the residents” she said.

‘Fire on the Water’ Inspired By Cuyahoga River Fire 50 Years Ago
Cleveland Public Theatre’s “Fire on the Water” reflects on the infamous Cuyahoga River fire and considers how people relate to the environment 50 years later. Through a series of short plays, “Fire on the Water” revisits the past, celebrates progress and explores present day issues. It is a refresh of a 2015 production, which was part of a cycle of plays aiming to change how people feel about the environment.

DeWine Aims To Expand Addiction Services, Increase Child Welfare Funding
In his first State of the State address Tuesday, Governor Mike DeWine said he’s creating a new public health fund to help address mental health and substance abuse. He aims to expand the state’s crisis support services for kids and adults struggling with mental illness and addiction. One aspect would involve implementing emotional learning in schools to help kids make healthy decisions.

Cuyahoga County Drug Court Judge Opposes Issue 1
One of Cuyahoga County’s drug court judges joined Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike DeWine in opposing opposing state Issue 1, which would reduce penalties for drug possession. Judge Joan Synenberg, who presides over one of the county’s two drug dockets, spoke alongside DeWine at a campaign event Monday. Drug courts put defendants on a plan to receive treatment in exchange for having their case dismissed. Fifty-five counties in Ohio have at least one drug docket.

"Heartland" Report: Ohio Rural Areas And Energy Sector Grew
A new report from a D.C.-based think tank offers insight into how Ohio's economy has weathered the post-recession years compared to other Midwest states. The Brookings Institution report released Wednesday, calledThe State of the Heartland Factbook 2018, looks at economic conditions in 19 mostly-Midwestern states since 2010.

Purdue Pharma Nears Settlement As Judge Approves Opioid Negotiating Class
The federal judge in Cleveland overseeing a massive set of lawsuits over the opioid crisis has approved a plan that could allow communities nationwide to benefit from drug company settlements and court judgements. The decision comes amid news that one of the defendants, Purdue Pharma, is nearing a settlement with more than 2,000 local governments.

Akron’s QuTheatr Highlights LGBTQ+ Youth Experiences
Jaxx Cheline never acted before joining QuTheatr Ensemble in Akron, but an appreciation for art and interest in making money was enough to propel the 14-year-old to give it a try. Cheline plays “Anthony” in the upcoming production, “Through His I.” “He is trans, and he is in high school. And it's about his experiences there,” Cheline said. “He gets bullied a lot and gets ignored by the administration, and so he's in a really dark place about it.”

Cleveland Serial Killer Anthony Sowell Dies In Prison
Anthony Sowell, who was convicted in 2011 of killing 11 women in Cleveland, died Monday in an Ohio prison medical facility. A prison spokeswoman said the 61-year-old was admitted Jan. 21 with a terminal illness after spending close to 10 years on death row. She provided no details on his illness, other than that it was not COVID-19 related.

Lakewood Passes Paid Parental Leave Ordinance
Lakewood City Council approved an ordinance to allow paid parental leave for city employees this week. And one Cleveland City Council member is hoping Cleveland is next. The Lakewood ordinance provides 12 weeks of paid leave for the birthing parent. Non-birthing parents are eligible for two weeks of paid bonding leave.

Cleveland Clinic Offers Vaccine Clinic At Fairfax Community Health Center
Nearly 350 people received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine this week at the Langston Hughes Community Health Center, part of the Cleveland Clinic network. The health center is offering weekly vaccination clinics as part of an effort to reach people of color and underserved or at-risk populations.
