But a new book shows that there’s a lot more to the river. Ryan Schnurr spent a week walking and canoeing the length of the river last summer. He has turned that experience into a book called In the Watershed. It’s part memoir and part lesson on the Maumee’s place in history.

An autopsy of the county coronor originally ruled Tanisha Anderson's death a homicide. But the attorney general's office ordered another autopsy last year after it was discovered the case file was tainted with statements by the two officers involved in the incident.

  • by Julie Grant, Allegheny Front Natural gas and brine water continue to pour uncontrollably from a well pad in Belmont County, near Powhatan Point, after an explosion and fire at the site Thursday morning. No one was injured when workers lost control at a well pad owned by Exxon’s XTO Energy near the Ohio River. Nearby residents reported hearing the explosion, and the low rumbling sounds of the fire. About 100 were told to evacuate their homes.
  • Gubernatorial hopeful Dennis Kucinich is calling for cities across Ohio to lobby state lawmakers to ban assault rifles. The former Ohio congressman says public opinion about high-powered weapons is at a tipping point. Supporters from across Ohio crowded into a hotel meeting room in downtown Cleveland bearing signs and chanting their support for Kucinich's plan to lobby the state legislature for a change in Ohio's gun laws.
  • Ohio and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have settled a lawsuit over dredging in the Cuyahoga River. The state and the federal agency have fought for years over how to handle sediment scooped from the river. The Army Corps wanted to dump it into Lake Erie, but the state said that was unsafe. Under the settlement, the Army Corps will bear the cost of disposing of sediment dredged in 2016 and 2017. That material was placed in confined disposal facilities, not in the lake. The settlement was filed Wednesday in federal court in Cleveland.
  • The city of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County plan to help finance a new apartment and retail project in the Ohio City neighborhood. The plan is to build two apartment buildings on what’s now a pair of parking lots between West 28th and West 29th streets along Detroit Avenue. There are plans for a pharmacy, hardware store or other retail on the ground level. The buildings will house about 160 units total in what’s been dubbed the city’s Hingetown area.
