The Cleveland Community Police Commission is proposing some changes to a draft police search and seizure policy. The commission collects public input on the city’s police reform agreement with the Justice Department. The policy lays out how—and in what circumstances—police can search people and property for evidence of crimes.

Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish wants to hire a consultant to help improve conditions in the county jail, which the U.S. Marshals Service deemed “inhumane” in a November report. The Budish administration plans to ask the county’s board of control to approve a $38,500 contract with the American Correctional Association, a professional group for prisons and jails based in Alexandria, Virginia.

The executive director of the Cuyahoga County Public Library is planning to check out this summer. Sari Feldman will retire after leading the library the last 16 years, helping to make it one of the country’s best. Feldman started as a jail librarian while still a graduate student in Wisconsin. She came to Cleveland to join the library in 1997 and became its executive director in 2003. She guided the system with its 27 branches through a $110 million capital improvement plan and several successful levy campaigns.

MetroHealth announced a wage increase today, with all employees now making a minimum wage of $15 per hour. The average wage increase is 12.1 percent and will affect 928 employees, many of whom work in entry-level positions like patient transport, food services, and facilities maintenance. The wage increase reflects a commitment to provide support to employees says President and CEO Dr. Akram Boutros.

The trustees of Kent State University have picked a new president. Todd Diacon will succeed Beverly Warren in leading the public university, according to a news release from the university. Kent State’s board found the new president from within the university’s own ranks. Diacon is currently KSU’s provost and executive vice president, where he oversees the school’s academic affairs, faculty, staff and administration.

Cuyahoga County Sheriff Clifford Pinkney submitted a letter of resignation Friday. County spokseperson Mary Louise Madigan confirmed to ideastream the resignation is effective Aug. 3. Pinkney is resigning for “personal reasons,” she added. “We thank him for his service and the search for his replacement will begin immediately,” Madigan said. A source at the Sheriff's Department cast Pinkney's departure as a retirement rather than a resignation.

The Cleveland Clinic confirmed Wednesday that a first-year resident who made anti-Semitic comments on social media was no longer working at the hospital. 27-year-old Lara Kollab worked at the Clinic from July to September 2018. The hospital said it recently became aware of Kollab’s 2012 tweet that said she would “purposely give all the yahood the wrong meds.” Yahood is the Arabic word for Jews.

The city of Akron says an attempted cyberattack sought to access city funds, but a city news release says investigators do not have evidence that personal information was compromised. A news release from Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan’s office says the city noticed suspicious activity on its network on Tuesday afternoon. The city’s IT office shut down its critical computer systems, including Akron’s online 311 service, as a precaution.
