ACLU, Federal Government In Court Battle Over Elkton Inmate Releases
The ACLU of Ohio is challenging the federal government’s progress transferring inmates out of a federal prison south of Youngstown in response to a coronavirus outbreak there. U.S. District Judge James S. Gwin ordered the release or transfer of hundreds of inmates from Elkton Federal Correction Institution in April.

New Guidelines Recommend Remdesivir, But Not Other Drugs, To Treat COVID-19
The Infectious Diseases Society of America, one of the leading organizations in the U.S. for infectious disease management, released new guidelines for COVID-19 treatment and drugs being tested to treat the coronavirus. Cleveland Clinic’s Dr. Adarsh Bhimraj, who led the panel that issued the revisions, said there is moderate evidence remdesivir, an antiviral medication, may be an effective treatment.

moCa Executive Director Jill Snyder Resigns
Updated 3:27 p.m., Friday, June 19, 2020. Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art Executive Director Jill Snyder stepped down Friday, two weeks after issuing an apology for canceling a summer exhibit on police violence. Snyder is resigning after 23 years at the helm of moCa, which included moving the museum to its current site on Euclid Avenue, near Case Western Reserve University.

Warrants Issued For Three Suspects In Murder Of Na'kia Crawford
Warrants have been issued for three suspects and Akron police have located the vehicle used in the murder of Na’kia Crawford. The black Chevy Camaro was found in Cleveland, said Akron Deputy Police Chief Jesse Leeser at a Thursday press conference. The vehicle was located and transported to the Akron Police Department for processing. Warrants were issued against 18-year-old Jaion Bivins, 24-year-old Janisha George and a 17-year old male suspect, Leeser said. All three suspects are from Summit County.

University Of Akron Plans To Reopen Campus For Fall 2020 Semester
The University of Akron is planning on resuming in-person classes in the fall. An announcement released Friday by the university’s president, Gary Miller, said the fall 2020 semester will be a mixture of in-person and online instruction. Residence halls will be reopened and operate with all rooms as single occupancy.

Greater Cleveland Congregations Launches COVID-19 Testing Initiative
Eighteen Northeast Ohio church congregations are joining forces to offer free, on-site COVID-19 testing. In addition to getting more people tested, the effort also aims to address racial disparities in coronavirus response. Greater Cleveland Congregations is launching the Color of Health Initiative, with an emphasis on the African American community and other higher-risk groups. The initiative is a partnership with the Cuyahoga County Board of Health and MetroHealth.

COVID-19 Pandemic Showcasing Evolved Role Of Nurses, Local Expert Says
The World Health Organization is calling 2020 the “Year of the Nurse” to commemorate Florence Nightingale, a nursing pioneer born 200 years ago. In a virtual City Club of Cleveland forum Friday, May Wykle, a long-time nurse and former dean of the Case Western Reserve University School of Nursing, discussed the evolving roles of nurses. “It’s ironic that in the ‘Year of the Nurse,’ the nurses have been the standout caregivers during the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said.

Illegal Fireworks Use On The Rise In Northeast Ohio Ahead Of July Fourth
As many cities cancel Fourth of July celebrations in light of the coronavirus pandemic, illegal backyard fireworks use is on the rise in parts of Northeast Ohio. The Euclid Police Department has received 142 fireworks complaints since May 1. That's almost four times the number of calls received in the same period last year. The COVID-19 pandemic could be contributing to an early start on July Fourth celebrations, according to Prevent Blindness Northeast Ohio Regional Director Darcy Downie.

Cleveland Public Library Cutting $6 Million From Budget Due To Pandemic
The Cleveland Public Library will freeze hiring and take other cost-saving measures to offset the anticipated coronavirus-related funding loss. CPL also will restrict spending on its collections and tap into its unencumbered fund, according to a press release. The changes will cut an estimated $6 million from the budget. The library has also applied for SharedWork Ohio through the state Department of Job and Family Services, which would allow the library to continue employing workers, with reduced hours. CPL estimates it could save $2.3 million through the program.
