Akron Slowly Recovering From Cyberattack
In light of a cyberattack nearly three weeks ago that continues to disrupt services, the city of Akron is spending $100,000 for protection against malware. And the expense of the attack and recovery is expected to grow exponentially. The city believes the attack was launched at least in part by a phishing email, and the goal was to transfer city money into fraudulent credit cards. Chief of Staff James Hardy says none of the money left city coffers, but that’s about the only piece of good news.

Cleveland Narrowly Tops Detroit In List of Poorest U.S. Cities
Cleveland has passed Detroit to become the mid-to-large-sized city with the highest poverty rate in country, according to new annual U.S. Census Bureau estimates released this week. Proposed Akron Charter Amendment Would Require Release Of Police Videos
Akron voters will decide next week on a charter amendment that would require police release video from body or dashboard cameras in cases of fatal or serious use of force. Issue 2, proposed by a citizen-led charter review commission, is among six proposed amendments to the Akron city charter on the ballot this year. State and federal regulations prohibit the release of some footage due to privacy concerns, said city spokesperson Ellen Lander-Nischt. But even the footage that is not covered by those protections often isn’t released, Lander-Nischt said.

Shaker Heights Mansion Inspired 'No One's Home'
A real-estate tour isn’t supposed to include missing radiators, graffiti on the walls and blood stains on the floor. Author D.M. Pulley didn’t buy the foreclosed Shaker Heights mansion she toured in the wake of the nation’s 2008 housing crisis. Instead, she imagined a history for such a place and created her latest mystery, “No One’s Home” (Thomas & Mercer).
