Quicken Loans Arena Deal Heads to Cleveland Council Finance Committee
Cleveland City Council held a six-hour meeting Tuesday on a proposal to spend public money on expanding Quicken Loans Arena. This upcoming Monday, the measure will go before council’s finance committee, which is typically the last stop before a vote on the floor. The deal would extend Cleveland’s admissions tax for another 11 years, up until 2034. An estimated $88 million in revenue from collections at the Q would help pay down the debt on renovation work there.

Ohio has the eleventh highest rate of babies dying before their first birthday, according to new CDC data released Thursday. The report also shows Ohio had the second highest infant mortality rate in the country for non-Hispanic black women. In Northeast Ohio, the overall infant mortality rate has slowly declined over the last several years, but the racial gap has widened, with more than 6 non-Hispanic black babies dying to every 1 non-Hispanic white baby in 2017, said Richard Stacklin at the Cuyahoga County Board of Health.

Meteorologist Recalls Ohio's Great Blizzard Of 1978
Forty years ago this week, a massive storm struck Ohio. High winds whipped up snowdrifts and tore down power lines as temperatures plunged. Over two days, the blizzard of 1978 killed 51 people in the state. Kirk Lombardy was about 12 years old at the time. He recalled going outside to shut the doors of a neighbor’s shed. “All I remember about it was I was leaning into the wind,” he said, “and I could not fall over because the winds were so strong.”

But earlier this year his life as a touring comedian was in jeopardy when a tumor was discovered in his wife's brain. "She had this tumor the size of a pear. We discovered it the week before Easter. It was in a very precarious position. It was right on these cranial nerves which control just about everything you do," Gaffigan said.
