Updated: 5:20 p.m., Thursday, May 14, 2020 University Hospitals is using a new protective tool to conduct COVID-19 tests. The hospital system’s innovation department, UH Ventures, partnered with the Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network (MAGNET) to design and develop innovative COVID-19 testing booths. Workers administer the tests through arms-length gloves attached to a barrier on the booth. This could speed up the testing process, as the workers no longer need to change personal protective equipment in between each test.

This unusual summer also means a number of Cleveland-favorite events are either canceled or postponed due to coronavirus concerns. Friday morning, the board of the Cuyahoga County Fair announced it was canceling this year's event. Board President Tim Fowler said the fair is complex and one error can ruin a year of planning and preparation.

A tax reassessment requested by a gas transmission company has Lorain County officials frustrated by the possibility of losing nearly 40 percent of the expected taxes before the county has collected any money at all. The NEXUS pipeline was initially estimated to bring $9 million to Lorain County, but the company is appealing to the Ohio Department of Taxation for a reassessment of its value.

Updated: 5:37 p.m., Tuesday, April 7, 2020 Most of the remaining staff at The Plain Dealer will no longer cover news in Cleveland or Cuyahoga and Summit counties, instead shifting to become a "bureau" covering outlying areas. The announcement comes just days after 22 staff were laid off. The 14 remaining reporters will cover five Northeast Ohio counties: Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina and Portage, according to a statement from the Northeast Ohio Newspaper Guild Local 1.

All the infected inmates lived in the same area of the jail, and MetroHealth System is doing contact tracing to determine who could have been exposed to the virus. "The city and county health departments are working together to support Metro in this investigation,” County Executive Armond Budish said. “And it's important, I want to repeat: we are prepared for this."

Case Western Reserve University faculty members Fanny Ye and Ken Loparo have created an online mapping tool called Alpha-Satellite that attempts to show the risk of community spread of the coronavirus in any given area.

Storefronts and buildings throughout Public Square and along Euclid Avenue were looted or damaged after demonstrations outside City Hall and the Cuyahoga County Justice Center.
