East Cleveland Turns Over Emergency Dispatch To Cuyahoga County
Cuyahoga County is taking over East Cleveland’s emergency dispatch system, continuing the county’s years-long effort to consolidate 911 call taking. County council signed off this week on the plan, which East Cleveland City Council approved last year.

Program Tackling Youth Violence Plans To Expand In Cleveland Neighborhoods
A group of pastors and volunteers involved with the Cleveland Ten Point Coalition walk the streets of the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood one night a week. They try to reach out to young people in the east side community in an effort to prevent youth violence. The program began in Cleveland last fall. They met Friday with national and regional leaders to discuss next steps including adding more boots on the ground, raising awareness for more volunteers, and securing funding for stipends, said Regional Ten Point Director Reverend Charles Harrison.

New Cleveland Police Staffing Plan Guided By Call Volume And Response Times
Cleveland’s division of police will staff its neighborhood districts based on volume of calls under a new plan awaiting a federal judge’s sign-off. The division is adopting what’s called a “workload-based” approach. Police analyzed calls for service in 2016 based on location, time of day, type and other categories. Cleveland plans to staff its five districts and three daily shifts based on that data.

Funeral services for philanthropist and civic leader Henry Goodman are set for Tuesday afternoon. As a board member of organizations ranging from the Cleveland Orchestra to Cleveland State University, Goodman was a quiet but influential voice for change.

Feds Crack Down On Gun Possession By Domestic Abusers
The US Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio has announced indictments of four area men on charges of firearms possession. As convicted domestic abusers, they were forbidden from having guns. That crackdown is part of a new effort by law enforcement agencies.

A Courtroom Drama Where the Audience is the Jury
Courtroom dramas have long entertained audiences, but onstage at Baldwin Wallace University tonight is a production where the audience becomes the jury. "The Defamation Experience" centers on an African-American business owner who sues a white developer for defamation, after he accuses her of stealing a family heirloom. Chicago-based managing producer Kimm Beavers has starred in the show which tours nationally. While she will not act in tonight's production, Beavers will lead the post-show discussion.

Cleveland Arts Advocacy Group CPAC Becomes Arts Cleveland
The arts advocacy group behind securing public funding for arts and culture in Cuyahoga County through a cigarette tax is changing its name. Community Partnership for Arts and Culture, or CPAC, is now Arts Cleveland. It was at times confused with Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, or CAC, the agency in charge of allocating the public dollars raised through the cigarette tax. Arts Cleveland remains an advocate for arts and culture in the region, and, with the name change, shares a new strategic plan.

Cleveland Extends Community Police Commission Application Deadline
Cleveland is extending the deadline to apply to join the city’s Community Police Commission from Aug. 15 to Aug. 30. The Community Police Commission is a 13-member panel charged with collecting public feedback and making policy recommendations on Cleveland’s 2015 police reform agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice.

Access to Arts Key to Akron Cultural Plan
People enjoy the parks and zoo, value working artists and want to feel welcome in Akron’s arts and culture scene. Those are some of the sentiments captured to date in the process of developing a cultural plan for Akron. The goal is to come up with actionable steps for the city, cultural organizations, artists and the greater community, according to Nicole Mullet, executive director of ArtsNow, the nonprofit leading the effort.
