Bush Outlines Bird-Flu Strategy
President Bush is calling for $7.1 billion in emergency funding to protect against a flu pandemic. Speaking Tuesday at the National Institutes of Health, the president said he wants to have enough vaccine to protect 20 million Americans against the current strain of bird flu.

Egypt completes the third and final phase of parliamentary elections Thursday amid clashes between supporters of the banned Muslim Brotherhood and the ruling National Democratic Party. The violence has escalated with the success of supporters of the opposition party at the polls.

CBO Forecasts $368 Billion Deficit
The Congressional Budget Office forecasts a deficit of $368 billion for the current fiscal year, a $20 billion jump from its prediction last fall. The numbers do not include the additional $80 billion for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan that the Bush administration has said it will seek from Congress.

Suicide in Wisconsin Linked to Chicago Murders
A man who killed himself during a routine traffic stop reportedly left a note claiming responsibility for the murders of the husband and mother of federal judge Joan Lefkow. The man, identified as Bart Ross, had lost a legal case before before Lefkow.

Actor, Activist Ossie Davis Dies at 87
Actor Ossie Davis has died at 87. He was found this morning in a hotel room in Miami, where he was making a film called Retirement. The cause of death was not immediately known. Davis was a distinguished presence on stage, on screen, and as an activist taking on racial injustice.

Baseball Stars Called to Testify on Steroids
The Senate subpoenas some of the biggest names in Major League Baseball to testify before Congress about alleged steroid use. However, current and former stars including Sammy Sosa, Jason Giambi and Mark McGuire are reluctant, and the league is challenging the invitations.

Family of Murder Victim Spurns IRA Offer
The Bush administration joins the British government in condemning an Irish Republican Army offer to shoot some of its own members as punishment for killing a man in Belfast in January. The family of the dead man rejected the offer and said fear of retribution is preventing witnesses to the killing from coming forward.

A 10-member jury sees photos and video evidence in the court-martial of Spc. Charles Graner, a central figure in the abuse scandal at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison. The defense argued Monday that Graner was ordered to rough up prisoners ahead of interrogation. Hear NPR's Jackie Northam.

Democrats Again Block Bolton Nomination
For the second time in a month, Senate Democrats block the confirmation of John Bolton to become U.N. ambassador and are urging President Bush to consider another candidate. The president left open the possibility that he'd bypass the Senate and appoint Bolton during the July Fourth congressional recess.

Border Patrol Helped by Variety of Factors
Volunteer "Minutemen" have spent the past three weeks on Arizona's border with Mexico, trying to deter illegal crossings. The group claims success. But other factors are also at play, including increased warnings by the Mexican government and traditional migration patterns that shift westward this time of year.
