Ohio’s childcare workers rank among the state’s most economically vulnerable employees, according to a factsheet released Friday by Groundwork Ohio, which lobbies for childcare workers. The profession employs more than 53,000, and most are women. Half of those workers rely on some kind of public assistance. That’s because wages are rock bottom: the average Ohio childcare worker makes roughly $20,000 a year – even though they are likely to have credentials beyond a diploma. The state's average wage is $54,000 annually.

Shaker Heights native Anita Hollander has spent her career acting, singing and advocating for people with disabilities. She personally lost her leg to cancer at age 26. Hollander returns home to perform a one-woman show featuring selections from her latest solo musical, “Spectacular Falls,” at Fairmount Temple in Beachwood Saturday. “It’s a show about the many ways we use the word fall,” Hollander said. “It starts with the event of my falling and breaking my hand four years ago after already having lost a leg long, long ago.”

Only a small percentage of women in Cleveland are aware of a drug that can help prevent HIV infection, according to a new report. Less than 15 percent of the 351 heterosexual women surveyed knew about pre-exposure prophylaxis, commonly known as PrEP. It’s a pill that can help prevent those who are at a high risk of contracting HIV from getting the disease. MetroHealth researcher Milana Bogorodskaya led the study and said PrEP was primarily marketed to men when it first came out in 2012.

The plaintiffs in the federal lawsuit against opioid manufacturers and distributors are proposing creating a "negotiating class" to settle claims with the companies. Lawyers for the drug companies and the cities, counties and towns suing them descended on District Court Judge Dan Polster's Clevleand federal district courtroom Tuesday for a hearing. Polster started by saying the opioid litigation in front of him has been “called by some the most complex litigation ever tried.”

Private insurance companies in Ohio are now required to cover doctor visits over the phone or on the computer. The recently approved state budget includes a provision requiring insurance companies to cover remote doctor visits called telemedicine. Gov. Mike DeWine (R) signed the two-year budget bill July 18. Criminals are trying to obtain Social Security numbers and money with threats of prosecution or freezing funds if you don’t cooperate.

The U.S. job market picked up steam in June. Employers added 224,000 jobs, more than triple May's numbers. The unemployment rate inched up to 3.7% as more workers entered the job market.

An estimated 30,000 Ohioans live within 650 feet of an underground natural gas storage well, according to a study published this week in the journal Environmental Health. The study examined storage facilities in six states, finding that 65 percent of wells are in urban and suburban areas. The wells hold natural gas before delivery to businesses and households.
