Cleveland Jazz In The Jazz Age
At the Cleveland Museum of Art’s “The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s” visitors view the exhibit while the music that gives the era its name plays in the background. So what was playing in the foreground while the Jazz Age was actually taking place in Cleveland in the 1920s? To find out, we asked Joe Mosbrook. He’s the author of the 1993 book “Cleveland Jazz History” and host of a weekly radio feature of the same name that’s aired on WCPN since 1988.

Monitor Says Cleveland Needs New Approach to Police Complaint Backlog
The monitor overseeing Cleveland’s police reform agreement says the city is “not on the right track” in reducing a backlog of citizen complaints. City officials, the monitoring team and the U.S. attorney’s office agreed at a federal court hearing today to come up with a new plan by mid-December for cutting down the backlog. “The city needs to take this seriously,” monitor Matthew Barge said at the hearing. He later added, “This has been festering for a very long time.”

With much attention focused on the Cleveland Museum of Art exhibit, “The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s,” Cleveland Jazz Orchestra’s artistic director Paul Ferguson wanted to kick of the CJO’s 2017-18 season with a nod to the music that gave the era its name. So now the question became: what to play? Ferguson turned to a work that has come for many to represent the sound of the “Jazz Age.”

With another government shutdown looming this week, Senate Democrats, including Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, are still hoping to strike a deal on protections for the undocumented immigrants known as "Dreamers." But at a news conference Monday, Brown suggested that failure to reach an agreement on the issue is "unlikely" to result in another shutdown.

Sonny Rollins Establishes Oberlin Ensemble to Give Back
It was a letter that helped jazz legend Sonny Rollins make up his mind. The 87 year old jazz legend, whose life life-long mission has been to give back to others wanted to award a major gift to one of the schools that had honored him with a doctorate. The question became: “where?” Rollins who has received honorary degrees from a number of institution was considering Berklee College of Music, The New England Conservatory and Julliard School.

Kevin Kelley Reelected As Cleveland City Council President
Cleveland City Council’s Democratic caucus voted unanimously on Monday to retain Kevin Kelley as the body’s president. No other members made a bid for the top leadership spot. The caucus invoked the “unit rule,” a procedural measure that enforces unanimity when the leadership vote is officially recorded on the council floor Jan. 1. Democrats who break with the majority would not be invited back to party caucus meetings.
