CLE Novelist Thrity Umrigar Tackles Race, Class & Power
Thrity Umrigar latest novel, Everybody's Son,tells the story of nine-year-old Anton, a mixed-race boy, who escapes an at-risk life with a crack-addicted mother when he is adopted by a wealthy east coast politician. But, as Anton grows into an adult with his own political aspirations he struggles with personal identity issues. Umrigar starts her story with a lyric from American-balladeer Bruce Springsteen, which capsulizes Anton's dilemma:

Harlan Sands To Fill Berkman’s Role as CSU President
Cleveland State University named Harlan Sands as the school’s seventh president Monday. His tenure will begin July 1 following the retirement of current President Ronald Berkman, who has been in the role for nine years. Sands has had a nearly two-decade career in higher education, serving in various academic and administrative roles. He currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer for the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, a position he’s held since 2017.

Meteorologist Recalls Ohio's Great Blizzard Of 1978
Forty years ago this week, a massive storm struck Ohio. High winds whipped up snowdrifts and tore down power lines as temperatures plunged. Over two days, the blizzard of 1978 killed 51 people in the state. Kirk Lombardy was about 12 years old at the time. He recalled going outside to shut the doors of a neighbor’s shed. “All I remember about it was I was leaning into the wind,” he said, “and I could not fall over because the winds were so strong.”

International Enrollment Declining At Universities
International students make up 23 percent of the enrollment in Ohio graduate programs, but new data shows, nationally, that number took a hit last year and is trickling down to Ohio schools. A report from the National Science Foundation, a federally run research agency, shows that after nearly a decade of consistent growth, the number of international undergraduate students with the visas declined by 2.2 percent in 2017, while graduate student enrollment dropped by 5 and a half percent.

Northeast Ohio Projects Win State Historic Preservation Tax Credits
Eight projects in Northeast Ohio have won the latest round of state historic preservation tax credits. Northeast Ohio will claim the biggest chunk of the tax credits, with about $9.8 million newly awarded out of the $28.4 million given out this round. The state also set aside credits in this round for the Goodyear headquarters building in Akron, Union Trust building on Euclid Avenue and May Company building on Public Square, three local projects that received large allotments of credits over several years.

Fifth Third Bank's $1000 Bonuses Are A Shrewd Business Move, Experts Say
Fifth Third Bancorp is promising to raise its minimum wage to $15/hour and give most of its employees a thousand dollar bonus after President Trump signs the GOP tax cuts into law. The Cincinnati-based company announced the decision Wednesday, saying it wants to pass on the savings. But some experts say it has other reasons to "spread the wealth."

The GOP Tax Overhaul Is Already Generating Economic Gains—For Accountants
Republicans say the tax overhaul bill, which President Trump signed into law Friday, will spur massive economic growth and job creation (“Jobs, Jobs, Jobs!” the president cheered on Twitter, after the bill passed both houses of Congress with no Democratic votes). And while many policy experts disagree, one profession is almost certain to see a bump. You guessed it: tax preparers.
