Trade War Rattles Ohio Farmers Pondering Markets For 2019
It was a wild ride for Ohio farmers this year. President Trump’s trade war with China cut off exports for many farmers, and it’s affecting their plans for 2019. After President Trump announced tariffs on Chinese steel this spring, China retaliated with a 25 percent tariff on American soybeans and other agricultural products. Medina County farmer Tom Trout says the export market for soybeans completely dried up and prices dropped. “You give the market what it wants, and right now it’s telling us it does not want more soybeans,” Trout said.

New LGBT Community Center Opens In Gordon Square Arts District
After nearly two decades in a basement, the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland on Friday will officially be out in its new home. The spacious 15,000 sq. ft, two-story building with lots of windows in the Gordon Square Arts District is a far cry from that basement. The center will still offer outreach, education and training programs, as well as new programs taking advantage of more space and amenities like a state-of-the-art kitchen.

Federal SNAP Changes Restrict Benefits For 29 Ohio Counties
Just 13 Ohio counties will be eligible for a waiver for heightened Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) requirements in the face of a federal rule change beginning in April. That’s compared to 42 counties with a waiver now. Federal regulations require able-bodied adults without dependents (ABAWD) to work, go to school, get work training or volunteer for 20 hours a week to qualify for food assistance. Otherwise, they can only receive SNAP benefits for three months out of every three years.

Cleveland Marijuana Arrests Could Soon Come Without Fines Or Jail Time
Cleveland City Council is considering an ordinance that would remove fines and prohibit jail time for possession of marijuana offenses. The proposed ordinance wouldn’t decriminalize marijuana in Cleveland. And state laws against possession still exist. Under the proposal, marijuana possession would still be a criminal charge in Cleveland. Up to 100 grams would be a minor misdemeanor, between 100 and 200 grams a 4th degree misdemeanor. All fines and court costs would be suspended.

State Board Tables Decision On Expanding Medical Marijuana Program
The State Medical Board of Ohio has delayed adding autism spectrum disorder and anxiety to the list of qualifying conditions for the medical marijuana program. The board met June 12 in Columbus to consider adding several new medical conditions to the program. The 12-member board rejected petitions to include depression, insomnia and opioid use disorder in Ohio’s medical cannabis program, said board spokesman Tessie Pollack. However, the board tabled the vote on anxiety and autism spectrum disorder, Pollack said.
