Two Juveniles, One Adult Charged In Cleveland Detective’s Killing
David McDaniel, the 18-year-old charged with the killing of Cleveland Police Det. James Skernivitz and Scott Dingess, will make his first appearance in Cleveland Municipal Court Wednesday morning. McDaniel is charged with two counts of aggravated murder. The court in Cleveland is expected to send the case over to Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas and the county prosecutor’s office.

Cleveland-Cliffs To Buy AK Steel For $1.1 Billion
Mining company Cleveland-Cliffs will buy West Chester, Ohio-based steelmaker AK Steel in a deal valued at $1.1 billion, the companies announced Tuesday in a news release. The merger will combine Cliffs’ iron ore operations with AK Steel’s manufacturing business, which largely supplies the automotive industry. Cliffs CEO Lourenco Goncalves will lead the company, according to the release, and AK Steel CEO Roger Newport plans to retire.

Local Homeless Shelters Struggling To Meet Winter Demand
Local homeless shelters are preparing for winter as temperatures drop across Northeast Ohio. While many Cleveland shelters already operate at capacity, staffers say there are still people without shelter in the harsh weather. The first winter storm of the season already blew through Cleveland, bringing a temperature drop of more than 10 degrees and mixed precipitation.

Samaria Rice, Cleveland Foundation Create Arts Fund In Tamir Rice's Name
Five years after the death of Tamir Rice, his family is partnering with the Cleveland Foundation to create a fund for arts and community projects. The Tamir Rice Legacy Fund aims to connect youth with outlets for self-expression. Samaria Rice created the fund in honor of her son’s love of art and says she hopes it will keep his memory alive.

Lorain County Identifies Health Priorities, Initiatives Through 2022
Lorain County has released its Community Health Improvement Plan, which outlines health issues it will focus on over the next three years. The top priorities include chronic disease, maternal and child health, mental health, substance abuse and cancer. Lorain County Public Health Commissioner Dave Covell said the county will have a strong focus on children's health, especially kids age one to five.

CMSD Will Feed Kids While Schools Are Closed
Young people in the Cleveland area will have access to three free meals a day during the extended spring break that begins next week. Cleveland Metropolitan School District CEO Eric Gordon said Friday that the district will host 22 sites where any person under the age of 18 can pick up a two-meal package containing breakfast and lunch. The service will operate between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. CMSD will provide shuttle service to the nearest host site from all its pre-K thru 8 school buildings.
