Fighting Sickle Cell Disease with Musical BEATS Program at University Hospitals
Sickle cell disease is an affliction of the red blood cells often diagnosed early in childhood. While the disease was once more deadly, today with medications and frequent doctor visits those who inherit the malady can manage it and live longer lives. However the transition period between childhood and adulthood can be a challenge for patients to be diligent in managing the disease.
2018 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award Winners Announced
The Cleveland Foundation has announced the winners of the 83rd annual Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards. In 19-35, Cleveland poet and philanthropist Edith Anisfield-Wolf established the award as a way to honor literature that explores issues of racism and diversity. U.S. High School Graduation Rate Hits Record High
For the fourth straight year, the U.S. high school graduation rate has improved — reaching an all-time high of 82 percent in the 2013-2014 school year, the Department of Education announced Tuesday.

Comedian Aparna Nancherla Finds Humor in Depression
By making fun of her anxieties onstage as a stand-up comic, Aparna Nancherla is making a difference as she challenges mental health stigmas. This week the acclaimed comedian, who has depression, comes to town for Acting Out Cleveland, a four-day arts fest for mental health and addiction awareness. She recently appeared onStudio 360with Kurt Andersen and Conanwith Conan O'Brien.
Traveling 'The Underground River' with Martha Conway
Award-winning author and Shaker Heights native Martha Conway's new novel - The Underground River - takes inspiration from a true-life tragedy. While researching the Antebellum period before the Civil War, Conway discovered the story of the Steamboat Moselle, one of the fastest riverboats of its time. On April 25, 1838, disaster struck the Moselle on the Ohio River near Cincinnati. "The captain was racing another steamboat, the Tribune. He overstocked the boilers and it exploded," Conway said.
FDA Recalls Common Blood Pressure Drugs After Finding Possible Carcinogen
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns of a shortage of a certain type of blood pressure medication, after contaminants were found that may be linked to cancer. The class of blood pressure drugs known as angiotensin II receptor blockers, or ARBs, have been recalled because of manufacturing impurities, which the FDA describes as “probable human carcinogens.” The recalled drugs include several brands of generic valsartan, losartan, and irbesartan.
