Former Cuyahoga County Jail inmates and their advocates described their experiences with the facility at a meeting in Cleveland’s Kinsman neighborhood Thursday night. The city’s NAACP chapter, civil rights attorneys and others organized the meeting at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in response to a U.S. Marshals Service report from November, which found inhumane jail conditions that violated inmates’ constitutional rights.

Case Western Reserve University’s law school Tuesday celebrated with a reception the biggest gift in the school’s history: $10 million to establish the Coleman P. Burke Center for Environmental Law. Burke is the founder of major East Coast commercial real estate companies, and a donor to a number of environmental causes.

The chair of Cleveland City Council’s safety committee said he plans more hearings after the firefighters union complained of poor conditions in stations and other problems. Leaders of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 93 told council last week that too many vehicles are not in good condition. They also said there are problems with the fire stations, too. Councilman Matt Zone, who chairs the safety committee, said he hopes that Cleveland’s forthcoming capital budget will put money toward fixing city-owned buildings.

There’s been a troubling rise in infant deaths due to extreme prematurity, according to new numbers from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health. In the first quarter of 2019, the infant mortality rate in Cuyahoga County increased to 10 deaths per 1000 live births. This compares to last year’s rate of about 8.5. The gain was driven largely by preterm births. Most of the babies were black.

A new website that attempts to quantify the effectiveness of Cuyahoga County government is now live. It is called Cuyahoga Performance. Its purpose is to provide data that county leaders and the public can use to assess how the county is doing economically, socially and bureaucratically.

The University of Akron is anticipating a $16 million operating deficit for the new fiscal year beginning July 1st. The university attributes the shortfall partly to a downward trend in enrollment the past several years and a projected 7 percent decrease in the fall. In order to close the budget gap, Akron's Board of Trustees approved a 5 percent decrease in operating funds for all departments Wednesday, but the university reported those cuts will not include layoffs. A 3 percent raise for non-bargaining employees was also approved.

Several priests who previously served at local schools have been named in a list of Society of Jesus members accused of sexually abusing minors. This month, U.S. provinces of the Catholic religious order began releasing names of clergy, living and dead, credibly accused of abuse since 1955. The Midwest Province of the Jesuits, which includes Ohio, published its list on Monday.

This is the last week of open enrollment for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The number of people enrolling for 2019 has decreased both nationally and in Ohio, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Enrollment in ACA health plans nationwide is down 11 percent compared to this time last year. In Ohio, enrollment is lagging by about 18 percent.
