ArcelorMittal Cleveland Plant Furloughs Nearly 250 Workers
ArcelorMittal is furloughing nearly 250 employees from its Cleveland plant due to the coronavirus pandemic, the company announced this week, in addition to the 48 employees already furloughed from the company's Eggers Avenue site earlier this month.

Ohio Children's Hospitals Team Up To Study COVID-linked Disease In Kids
Many kids infected with COVID-19 don’t show any symptoms, but for some, the infection is linked to serious illness. Children's hospitals in Ohio have formed a new working group to allow them to better diagnose and treat this disease, called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children, or MIS-C. Kids with MIS-C will have high fevers, gastrointestinal issues, and rashes. Internally, the kids will have clotting disorders, dehydration, and cardiac issues.

Study: Pandemic Leading To Burnout, Stress Among Health Care Providers
A new study published in the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine warns that health care providers may be experiencing increased burnout due to the coronavirus pandemic. Cleveland Clinic anesthesiologist and study co-author Dr. Praveen Chahar said provider burnout isn’t new, but dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic has caused even more stress. “One of the biggest reasons of increased stress in healthcare providers was a fear of getting infected themselves and a fear of infecting their loved ones,” he said.

What's Inside the Digital Collection At Cuyahoga County Public Library?
While library branches are closed people can still access books, movies and music online. Cuyahoga County Public Library has seen a spike in people utilizing its digital materials, according to collections manager Wendy Bartlett. “People are definitely turning to our digital resources, which we are thrilled about,” Bartlett said. “That’s what they are there for.”

36.5 Million Have Filed For Unemployment In 8 Weeks
Nearly 3 million people filed for unemployment benefits last week, the Labor Department says. It's the latest grim sign of the economic damage from the coronavirus crisis.
Senators Sherrod Brown, Rob Portman Plan Hearing On Pension Crisis
On Friday, Ohio’s two U.S. senators will hear from workers, retirees and employers whose pension plans are facing a financial crisis. A joint House and Senate committee is trying to figure out how to rescue plans that benefit Teamsters, miners, carpenters and other union workers. The pensions took financial hits during the recession and have big liabilities coming due as people retire.

AG Candidate Dettelbach Proposes Strengthening Human Trafficking Penalties, Laws
Touting his record as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Democratic Attorney General candidate Steve Dettelbach introduced a plan today to strengthen human trafficking laws in Ohio. The proposal includes tougher penalties for businesses and officials who profit from sex trafficking, as well as a ban on those who solicit sex from children during high profile events like conventions. “Ohioans and people nationally, we need to do better at not being nosy neighbors, but being better neighbors,” said Dettelbach.

UPDATE: Overdose Deaths Surge in Cuyahoga County; Older Residents Hit Hard
There has been a surge in fatal overdoses in Cuyahoga County over five days, and the recent spate of deaths has hit those over 60 years old harder than usual, according to the medical examiner. On Thursday, the medical examiner's office increased the number of overdose deaths reported from 14 to 16 after further testing. Dr. Thomas Gilson called the deaths in the five days from August 2 through August 6 “a concerning trend.” Four of those deaths occurred in one 24-hour period between Monday and Tuesday.

Names of Professor, Playwright Removed from Baldwin Wallace Theaters After Misconduct Allegations
The legacies of a Baldwin Wallace University theater professor and a Northeast Ohio playwright are now in question following accusations of sexual misconduct. Baldwin Wallace announced Monday that it received what it called "credible information" about sexual misconduct allegations against William Allman and John Patrick, both now deceased. As such, a statement from the University, said the names of Allman and Patrick will be removed from campus theater buildings.
