Advocates for a grocery store initiative in East Cleveland gathered at a forum this Monday to discuss goals for bringing healthy food to the neighborhood. The Northeast Ohio Alliance for Hope (NOAH), a community organizing group, announced at the forum that they’re working with Cuyahoga County Council to develop a framework to attract grocery stores to low-income neighborhoods. They say it should be ready within a year.

Ohio's two historically black colleges are neighbors, both about an hour southwest of Columbus. But they are considering getting even closer by merging some operations. Wilberforce University President Elfred Anthony Pinkard is calling this a "Collaborative Learning Arrangement" and "shared services relationship" with Central State University.

A proposed ordinance would set a timetable for lead inspections and cleanup in all Cleveland rental units built before 1978. Every rental unit in the city would have to be inspected beginning March 1, 2021, under newly introduced Under Ord. 747-2019, and all units would have to be certified as lead safe by 2023. Violations would carry civil and criminal penalties. Councilman Blaine Griffin co-sponsored the legislation, along with Council President Kevin Kelley and Councilman Kerry McCormack.

Nursing homes and sports leagues are reopening even as COVID-19 cases are on the rise in Ohio. But the pandemic’s persistence has one city back in shut-down mode. South Euclid had re-opened playgrounds and the city-owned dog park, but as of Monday they’re closed again, along with organized league play on the ball fields. The closures are due to a spike in COVID-19 cases there, said Keith Benjamin, the city’s community service director.

Cuyahoga County was originally set to ban plastic bags this July. But when the coronavirus pandemic hit, the ban was put on hold until January 2021, so retailers wouldn't have more chaos amid the pandemic. Officials from the Cuyahoga County Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services Board, or ADAMHS Board, are concerned that the added stress from the holidays will make it even more difficult for some people to cope.
