Oberlin History Professor Gathers 'Historians on Hamilton'
Lin Manuel Miranda's Tony-winning smash, "Hamilton," lands in Playhouse Square this week. It's been billed as a revolutionary musical about the American Revolution, but is the critically-acclaimed show really revolutionary? Not according to Oberlin College history professor Renee Romano. In the new book she's co-edited, "Historians on Hamilton," opinions are varied on the musical's true reflection of American history.

Two School Levies Rejected By Voters In Special Election
Voters in two northern Ohio school districts rejected school levies in their Aug. 6 special elections. More than 78 percent of those who voted Tuesday in the Willoughby-Eastlake City School District opposed a levy that would have raised more than $8 million to cover state-level cuts that have put the district in the red. The measure failed with only 1,925 votes in favor of the levy and 6,988 against.

Plastic Bag Ban Goes Into Effect Across Cuyahoga County
Shoppers in Cuyahoga County will need to find an alternative to single-use plastic bags, as some stores have already removed the option. The county’s bag ban goes into effect this week. Though businesses won’t be fined for providing plastic bags for the first six months, many stores have already started pushing their customers toward alternatives.

Number Of Cuyahoga County Juveniles Charged As Adults Doubles
Cuyahoga County leads the state when it comes to bindovers — or juvenile offenders sent to adult courts — and that number has doubled over the past two years. Last year, 100 young offenders were charged as adults, four times the rate in Franklin County. Organizations like the ACLU say the high number of bindovers are because prosecutors aren’t exercising discretion when filing charges.

All-Star Festivities Prompted Some New Uses For Old Downtown Spaces
The All-Star Game filled the coffers of a number of familiar downtown restaurants and hotels over the past week. But a number of entrepreneurs also set up temporary venues in some unexpected locations. For instance, an empty Euclid Avenue storefront found new life thanks to the Midsummer Classic. Marcie Gilmore stood behind a bar on some prime real estate at East Ninth and Euclid and explained.

Ohio Reports First Measles Case Of 2019
Amid the country’s worsening measles outbreak, Ohio is reporting the state’s first case of this year. A young unvaccinated adult in Stark County contracted the virus and has since recovered, but not before coming into contact with some people who are believed to be unvaccinated, according to the Ohio Department of Health’s Jose Rodriguez. Officials are monitoring those who may have been in contact with this individual and they are in self-quarantine, Rodriguez says.

Willoughby-Eastlake School Levy On Aug. 6 Special Election Ballot
Voters in the Willoughby-Eastlake City School district will head to the polls Aug. 6 to vote on a levy as part of a special election. The 4.99 mill tax levy will make up for a budget shortfall of more than $8 million due to the loss of state tax revenue, Superintendent Steve Thompson says.

July 4 Celebration Costs National Park Service As Maintenance Is Deferred
The National Park Service is diverting $2.5 million from park fees to cover costs for President Trump’s expanded Independence Day celebration on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., according to the Washington Post. Meanwhile, a bill to help fund $12 billion of delayed park maintenance sits in a Senate committee.

Goosen Wins Inaugural Bridgestone Senior Players Championship
By Khabir Bhatia, WKSU Retief Goosen birdied the final two holes to win the inaugural Bridgestone Senior Players Championship at Firestone Country Club in Akron for his first PGA Tour Champions title. The 50-year-old Hall of Famer from South Africa broke a tie for the lead with a 15-foot putt on the par-4 17th hole and made a 10-footer on the par-4 18th for a 2-under 68. He beat Jay Haas and Tim Petrovic by two strokes.

Brooklyn, Parma, And Strongsville To Vote On School Operating Levies
Early in-person voting for the May 7 primary began April 9 at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. Voters in some communities are deciding on new school district funding issues. Brooklyn City Schools is seeking an additional 10-year levy to cover operating costs “for the purpose of avoiding an operating deficit.” Strongsville City Schools’ five-year levy would fund current expenses.
