The Lorain City School Board voted unanimously Aug. 1 to place a $3.1 million renewal levy on the November ballot. But they plan to remove it if CEO David Hardy remains in charge of the struggling school district. During the meeting, one board member and the city’s interim mayor said they would not support the levy if Hardy stays.

The Geauga County Board of Health will start distributing naloxone to the community starting this fall. County health officials will distribute 250 kits of the opioid overdose reversal medication known as Narcan thanks to a $75,000 state grant. A new Cleveland City Council subcommittee will develop a plan to combat harmful algal blooms and other threats to Lake Erie. Cleveland City Council President Kevin Kelley appointed the new committee this week. The group will research what to do about algal blooms, which can contain toxins that pollute drinking water.

By Matthew Richmond Of the 22 previously unnamed clerics accused of sexual abuse and identified Friday by the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, 16 are dead. Four have been removed from the ministry. The church determined the allegations against those 20 were likely true. Two more are on administrative leave while the church considers the accusations.

This week, President Donald Trump, who is being treated for COVID-19, left the hospital and announced that coronavirus is not something to be afraid of. The New York Times reported Wednesday his three-day stay in the hospital would typically cost the average American more than $100,000. The president’s health is a national security risk, so he’s getting care the average person might not receive, MetroHealth family physician Dr. Christine Alexander said.

A beloved figure in the Cleveland art world and champion of the work of African American artists will be laid to rest this weekend. Painter and gallery owner Malcolm Brown died October 1 at the age of 89.

University Hospitals is consolidating, and its Elyria hospital will no longer offer labor and delivery services. The hospital system is moving birthing services from UH Elyria hospital to UH St. John Medical Center in Westlake, which is about 25 minutes away. The consolidation is not about saving money for the hospital, said UH Elyria Hospital President Kristi Sink.
