The former Ohio congressman says public opinion about high-powered weapons is at a tipping point. Supporters from across Ohio crowded into a hotel meeting room in downtown Cleveland bearing signs and chanting their support for Kucinich's plan to lobby the state legislature for a change in Ohio's gun laws.

Both of Ohio’s U.S. Senators expressed surprise at President Trump’s announcement today that he will bar transgender people from serving in the military. From member station WKSU, M.L. Schultze reports. Trump made his surprise declaration in a series of Twitter posts, saying the military can’t afford what he claimed are the “tremendous medical costs and disruption” that comes with transgender people. Democrat Sherrod Brown called that ungrounded.

Ohio and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have settled a lawsuit over dredging in the Cuyahoga River. The state and the federal agency have fought for years over how to handle sediment scooped from the river. The Army Corps wanted to dump it into Lake Erie, but the state said that was unsafe. Under the settlement, the Army Corps will bear the cost of disposing of sediment dredged in 2016 and 2017. That material was placed in confined disposal facilities, not in the lake. The settlement was filed Wednesday in federal court in Cleveland.

The city of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County plan to help finance a new apartment and retail project in the Ohio City neighborhood. The plan is to build two apartment buildings on what’s now a pair of parking lots between West 28th and West 29th streets along Detroit Avenue. There are plans for a pharmacy, hardware store or other retail on the ground level. The buildings will house about 160 units total in what’s been dubbed the city’s Hingetown area.

According to the Ohio EPA, 90% of Ohio’s historic wetlands have been destroyed. New research from the University of Waterloo in Canada shows wetlands play a bigger role than we thought in protecting water from harmful fertilizer nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen. Wetlands have several roles –they provide wildlife habitat, they hold water and reduce flooding, and they help filter nutrients in water running off the landscape.
