  • Part of First Year Cleveland’s 3-year plan to battle infant mortality is being rolled out this month. It includes a $100,000 grant from Ohio Medicaid to help educate women about safe sleeping patterns for babies. The grant money will be used to begin education services at various churches, as well as home visits in the community, says Bernadette Kerrigan, executive director for First Year Cleveland.
  • By Angelica Morrison The problem of sewer overflows affects the entire Great Lakes region. More than 182 municipalities have systems that can release untreated sewage during big storms, the Environmental Protection Agency says. A group called Environmental Advocates of New York analyzed sewage discharge data published by the state. The group estimates that more than 3.8 billion gallons of sewage was released into waterways from 2013 through July 2017.

  • The mayor of Green says he’s not satisfied with a $7.5 million settlement over the construction of the Nexus pipeline through his city, but said it was the best they could hope for. “I just know we were out of options," Green Mayor Gerard Neugebauer said Thursday. He negotiated the settlement that was accepted by city council in a 4-3 vote Wednesday night.
  • The new state rule for dentists limits prescribing opioids for acute pain to only 7 days, according to the Ohio Dental Board. It aims to reduce the risk of dental patients getting addicted to painkillers after oral surgery. Patients who suffer from chronic oral pain – pain that lasts longer than 3-6 months – are the exception and will still be able to receive standard opioid prescriptions.
