New Youngstown Mayor Inherits Big Riverfront Project
Youngstown’s Riverfront Park and Amphitheater project is getting under way with the coming of the New Year, and so is its oversight by a new administration in City Hall. Tito Brown took office as Youngstown’s 51st Mayor last week. This week he is making time for his first formal update on the $12 million public space development that he is inheriting.

The group charged with carrying out Summit County’s plan to better welcome and integrate immigrants and refugees is meeting this week to talk about economic development. The discussion comes amid drastic cuts in the number of refugees the Trump administration is allowing in the U.S.

New Project Combats Great Lakes Sewage Overflows
By Angelica Morrison A new collaboration between the Great Lakes Commission and Lawrence Technological University in Michigan takes aim at sewer overflows that are polluting the Great Lakes. Sewer overflows -- sometimes millions of gallons -- plague many cities in the Great Lakes region. The biggest cities, like Chicago, Toronto and Detroit, all have that problem. And in Niagara Falls, N.Y., heavy rains caused severe overflows that discolored the Niagara River this summer.

Wynton Marsalis on Jazz in Cuba
Well before many Americans had the opportunity to explore Cuba as of late, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra visited in 2010. In 2015, the band released a recording of performances from the Cuba tour, and ideastream spoke with artistic director Wynton Marsalis about the experience. Marsalis says the group made it clear that they were there as cultural ambassadors.

NEXUS Pipeline Seeks to Begin Construction Oct. 10
The developers behind the Nexus natural gas pipeline want to begin construction by next Tuesday. In August, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved the $2 billion pipeline that will run through 12 Ohio counties from Northeast Ohio to Michigan and Canada. The federal agency is in the process of reviewing the request.

Cleveland Police Working on Complaint Backlog, Hiring, City Says
The city of Cleveland says it’s working toward complying with the police reform agreement signed with the Justice Department two years ago. The city filed its latest six-month status update in federal court on Wednesday. Cleveland’s chief counsel says the city is focused on “substantially reducing” the backlog in complaint cases against officers.

Community Policing Requires More Than Rushing from Call to Call, Chief Says
Cleveland’s police chief says a change of mindset is needed for the department to fulfill its reform agreement with the Justice Department. Chief Calvin Williams spoke at a meeting of the National Black Prosecutors Association on Monday. Williams said that for two decades, police have faced pressure to respond quickly to calls, resolve the issue as fast as they can, and then move on to the next call.

Ohio Supreme Court to Hear Incompetency Case
The Ohio Supreme Court will hear arguments Tuesday on whether a judge can appoint a guardian to control the affairs of an adult without giving that person notice. For Ohio Public Radio, WKSU’s M.L. Schultze previews the case. The arguments center on a Cuyahoga County woman who – after 30-plus years of marriage -- was going through a divorce. Though she had an attorney, a few days before the divorce proceedings began, the family-court judge appointed what’s called a guardian ad litem to represent her.

Sanders Makes Stops in Ohio to Speak Against Republicans' Tax Reform Package
U-S Sen. and former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) made two stops in Ohio over the weekend to speak against the Republican tax cut package that is swiftly gaining ground on Capital Hill. The Senate passed the measure along party lines early Saturday.

Oberlin President on Hate Speech: 'We Will Not Elevate Their Voice'
A string of controversial flyers and graffiti have appeared on Ohio college and university campuses in recent months, but one private, liberal arts school says it will no longer share details of those incidents on a campus-wide scale. Carmen Twillie Ambar, president of Oberlin College, said the school has chosen to shift its response to the incidents. It will not notify students when flyers, posters and graffiti that include what could be consider hate speech appear on campus, unless it becomes a larger trend or there is an immediate safety concern.
