The Ohio Auditor's Office has taken its web server and online accounts offline after a cyberattack Sunday.

A statement from Ohio Auditor Keith Faber on Tuesday said the auditor's web server was attacked by overseas cybercriminals and "potentially foreign state actors."

Faber said his office has no evidence that the cyberattack put the personal financial information of Ohioans at risk.

Faber also said that the office has no reason to believe that the financial information of the government entities it audits, such as cities, villages and school districts is at risk.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we took the web server and online accounts offline while internal and external experts scrutinize the threat activity," Faber said in the statement.

"We quickly notified state and federal law enforcement and are working closely with them to identify the cybercriminals involved," Faber said.

The auditor said it is not a ransomware attack. Officials say the office still has all the data it did before the attack.

The auditor's office will create a temporary web platform to continue communicating with the public and government organizations until the permanent server is back online.

"I told my team – and I’m telling everyone we serve – that we will continue to protect our data, find out the extent of the attack, cooperate fully with our law enforcement partners, and tell the public more about this when we know more," Faber said.
